    Defense Question

Question out there to all the defensive minded gurus.

I watch fantasy football show on ESPN every weekend, and this came up during the show.

Keenan Allen is projected to have a big day today against our Steelers. In fact, I remember this being discussed last December on the Fantasy Show as well and he had a HUGE day against us last December a home.

Meaning this is a recurring, multi-year issue.

Why does our defense play so poorly against slot receivers? ALL Slot receivers. We lead the league again for most passes caught and yards allowed to slot receivers.

Since this was same as last year... What the hell?
Curious as to what you all think.

He did last year, so why won't he this year when our defense gives up an avg of over 130 plus yards a game to the slot.

However, we also give up the 6th most receptions and yards allowed to RB's as well.

Answer to my question probably has something to do with our zone scheme. Damn, seems like we always give up big plays over the middle- see Gronk. However, didn't they address this issue also by drafting Bush and bringing in Barron? Seems like its a recurring theme year in and year out.

We have the players now to make things tough on him.

When we acquired Minkah, there was a lot of chatter on podcasts I listen to talking about how slot corner is becoming one of the most important positions on the D.

I think part of the reason good WRs have a lot of success out of the slot is that they create match up problems.

We take advantage of this by putting JuJu in the slot too.

Hopefully having Fitz will yield better results this year than last year.

That's my $0.02 anyway, would like to hear what others think.

It was because of our refusal to take LBers off the field.
Bellicheat said it about our defense a few years back.
Bostic was on him last year on that 3rd down pass.
Look for the mismatch and exploit it, until Butler has caught enough flies in his half open mouth

Hopefully having better options in the secondary (and apparently him getting heckled at the golf course) motivates us to overcome this issue

                The standard is the standard?
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

It's scheme. Depot has written multiple articles on it. But it could also be the scheme is dictated by the players available.

Because we try to cover him with Line Backers.

Soft zone under is a train wreck against 11 personnel and between the numbers it's easy pitch n catch. Sit downs in the zone is just two easy without a monster pass rush and even with it balls out quick it's likely not going to the sidelines. Brady made a career inside the numbers with arrow routes , hooks etc against zone.
No Nelson tonight so that will be a challenge for us . Lets hope we trust our db's play with man under, Rivers not a threat to run so turning our backs in man should not hurt us.
Chargers have some OL issues up front we'll need to win. If both our lines play well we have a shot.

Gotta ease Hodges into the game. First start, national audience, away on the west coast, WRs banged up. It's going to be tough sledding for sure.
