Well, last night it seems like James Conner played the role of Rex Burkhead and Jaylen Samuels played the role of James White quite convincingly.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Jaylen Samuels does a little bit of everything

Posted by Darin Gantt on October 1, 2019, 6:01 AM EDT

The Steelers were going to be careful not to put too much on quarterback Mason Rudolph.

They made up for it by asking Jaylen Samuels to do a little bit of everything.

The Steelers running back filled up a stat sheet last night — running, receiving, and passing — as the Steelers switched things up to beat the Bengals.

The plan was to let Rudolph throw a bunch of short, safe passes, so they added some Wildcat wrinkles and tried to get Samuels out in space.

”We knew coming into this game that we was a big part of the game plan,” Samuels said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com. “So me and [James Conner] knew that we had to come out here and do our thing in the Wildcat and in the running back stuff. Downhill runs and stuff like that, we knew we had to make guys miss in open space.

“James had a couple good runs that bursted out and I had a couple good catches, so we was just feeding off each other and that’s kind of how we play and that’s how it was.”

Samuels ran 10 times for 26 yards and a touchdown. He caught eight passes for 57 yards. And he completed all three of his pass attempts for another 31 yards, a do-it-all night. They put him in the Wildcat seven times, leading to 43 yards and a score.

He became the first player in the league with multiple catches, runs, and passes since Terrelle Pryor in 2016.

“I think we saw it last year with how special and how versatile he is in space with the football, catching the football out of the backfield,” Rudolph said. “He’s a great piece of our offense. And he complements James Conner well.”

And as long as the training wheels are on Rudolph, that’s what they need.

Mike Tomlin: Wildcat is gimmicky, but we do what’s needed to win

Posted by Josh Alper on October 1, 2019, 12:29 PM EDT

The Steelers found a new way to use running back Jaylen Samuels in Monday night’s win over the Bengals.

Samuels took snaps out of the Wildcat seven times as the team introduced new wrinkles to an offense that was missing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, two tight ends and a fullback. Samuels completed three passes for 31 yards to go with 26 rushing yards and 57 receiving yards over the course of the proceedings.

At a Tuesday press conference, head coach Mike Tomlin called the formation “somewhat gimmicky” but that the team “did what we had to do to win the game” by breaking it out against Cincinnati. Tomlin said the team could use it more in the future without committing to doing so.

Opposing defenses will have to prepare for the possibility and the Steelers could introduce other wrinkles in the weeks to come to further diversify an offense that looks a lot different than the one they’ve run for the rest of Tomlin’s time in Pittsburgh.

The offense looked totally different once we got Samuels involved.

IMO we need to use him more and sprinkle in Conner as the punisher once Samuels opens things up a bit.

The Wildcat is cool but it’s also gimmicky and I’m not sure how long we can do it before it’s ineffective but I guess until they stop it.

Offense needs to run through Samuels IMO.

between that AND the short passes, i was honestly annoyed at how close the defense was able to get to the LOS. When they finally threw downfield, there was no one within 20 yards of the WR. But, all of the 3 yards and a cloud of dust runs were frustrating. Throw in a play action from time to time... Throw a deep-out and just chuck it OB... just back the defens up a little and keep them honest.

This offense reminds me of Bruce Arians.

A whole bunch of set ups early and then going deep late to wide open WR’s.

My thing tho is Mason is pretty good at protecting the ball.

Hopefully we start opening it up sooner these next few games.

                I'm up for more Samuels.

He looked good, and sharing the load kreps both of them fresh

BA would take an occasional shot early to let ya know he's there... Mike Wallace was good for the random 70-yard TD (or two) throughout a game.

It was the short passes that opened up the game. Mason was remarkably successful with them, completing 19 of 20 at one point. That's what opened up the deep rushes/passes.

We have had PLENTY of excellent number twos over the years including Blount, DeAngelo, and Conners.
Outside of injuries the issue is they were underutilized.

Heck it took Conners injury last season to see how effective Samuels was against the Pats.

Among all the garbage said about Tomlin, THIS is a legit criticism.

I hope they finally use the talent they have going forward.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:
