    Colbert & FA part I

I read today 3 significant things that Colbert said:

    1) He doesn't expect any "splash signings
    2) JJ is going to be free to test the market
    3) team wants resign Fort

    my response:
    1) We will be true to our roots, build through the draft and only use FA as insurance if we don't cover that hole in the draft. And we will continue to sign FA that are Boom or Bust. Players who had a down year, who in past have had potential or players coming off injuries, cap casualties. ex. DHB, Green, Mitchell, Bosic, Burnett
    2) He reached his ceiling, nothing great, easily replaced. Greatest aspect concerning him hometown kid, and durability. ---bring on Hockenson!!!
    3) Insurancegoing into draft if we fail to draft a top rated ILB. Bostic is gone...cap casualty.

      1) i thought since we had all this extra money we would be players( at least thats what i have been told in the past)
      2) jj will a loss. i doubt we get anything better at his price range, he is a solid locker room guy, and we dont need to waste a draft pick on that position(we have other needs)
      3) out of necessity

imo, if we dont make at least 2 big FA moves, we wont compete for anything but the afcn(which is good, i guess, for a lot of people)
we might get lucky and draft 1 rookie to start (ilb or cb)
would be really lucky if that 1 was an impact guy from the very beginning but when was the last time that happened for us?
now to expect to draft 2 starters and have them both be impact guys is really reaching

btw, i would love hockenson but i see that as a luxury pick if we dont do something big in FA
steelers = 3 ring circus with tomlin being the head clown

KC is saying what he needs to say. "Compete for Super Bowl" erases anything else. AB will be traded & LB gone. Everything else KC says about those two or plans are for the window sticker.

Listen..A gust just blew the window shut..It didn't latch. KC will push it back open & prop it there with a FA stick. Then Focus on "Draft" repair so it stays open.

Other teams "Cuts" will get their immediate attention so they don't factor in but I do think they make 2 signings that will be of note. One significant & that will be CB. Maybe part of AB trade but if not a FA. I think there will be visits and/or calls to gauge market. The guy signed won't be more than JH's number but could be at or close.

        CB
        1. Darby
        2. Roby
        3. Desir

Darby may be priced out. Roby may be more in line. Desir may be consultation prize.

        WR
        1. Williams
        2. Brown
        3. Moncrief

What JW will be isn't the same as what he showed them. They can not trade AB & hinge the #2 on JW or Rookie. That's a huge gamble. They will sign a proven #2 & draft another WR.

The Steelers should have 3 picks first 2 rounds after AB trade. There is enough talent at ILB the Steelers will find their guy in those rounds. White would make life easy in 1st. If he's gone I'm not so sure they have Bush graded there yet at #20 but that could change soon. What all of this does however is set them up for BPA if ILB not there. THATS where they need to get back to. So if it's Hockenson, Sweat, Polite, Burns, Murphy, Brown, Harmon, Harry, Samuel, Metcalf, enter name here...Highest Grade not QB, RB, OT,...Make the Pick! Get ILB over next two.

That's actually the opposite timeline for how it typically goes down.

Yeah, the draft is more important than free agency for us when it comes to overall team building, but the free agency period opens before the draft happens.

We tend to sign a couple of outside free agents prior to the draft to try to eliminate any "glaring holes" that would need to be filled immediately, so that we can let the draft come to us rather than having to reach for an obvious need.

It's quite rare that we sign a free agent after the draft to cover a hole that we did not fill in the draft.

Joe Haden was an exception, because Cleveland did not release him until late August.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

We are saying the same thing, I just worded it different. I am saying, "insurance " to cover a position so that we don't reach on that position, and if we don't get that pick, we are still "satisfied " going into the season.

            such as Bostic last year...

Gotcha...I just originally read your "if we don't cover that hole in the draft" statement as meaning that we would then go into free agency at that point (after the draft) to now try to plug that hole.

If any of the following players are still available when the Steelers draft and they take a TE it will be a F'N travesty:

                CB:

                Greedy Williams - LSU
                Deandre Baker - UGA
                Byron Murphey - Washington

                LB:

                Devin White - LSU
                Mack Wilson - Bama

I'm doing some homework on Byron Murphy; interesting prospect. I feel better about him over Williams & Baker.

Well, from that list, I'd say Devin White would be the BPA pick. But Hockenson would be second in my mind.

I was perusing quite a few mock drafts (not that most of these guys know any more than some of the posters on this board) but I was surprised by numerous drafts having Devin White available when the Steelers draft at 20. That’s a no-brainer in my mind. I was also surprised by the number of drafts that have the Steelers taking WR in Rd 1. Keeps things interesting.

Yeah, Devin White falling into our laps at #20 would be akin to David DeCastro falling into our laps at #24 in 2012. Perfect situation. No brainer. Run to the podium, don't walk.
