    Football Gods Working Against Us

What a roller coaster of a season. I don’t think I remember a team that was simultaneously so good and so bad at the same time.

We could hang with the best and lose to the basement dwellers.

So many missed chances. 1 more stop. 1 less INT. 1 more made FG. 1 less Missed PAT. 1 won challenge. 1 less fumble. 1 less bad call from the Zebras. 1 different play call in a critical situation. 1 less penalty.

Any one of these could have have been the difference in making the playoffs. It’s pretty unbelievable that so many things could go wrong for a relatively talented team. Should luck have gone our way at least one more time. It’s such a fine line for us to miss the playoffs.

Then on top of it all, 9-6-1 should have gotten us into the playoffs 70% of the time. Of course this was a 30% year. All the football gods were working against us in every way.

Oh well. May you all enjoy the offseason and by the time we’re all back into the swing of next season, Pittsburgh will be the city of champions with the Pens and Buccos bringing some trophies to the Steel City.

As as weird as the odds have been, the Pirates and the Penguins winning championships seems like the only thing that can even it all out for us.

who are the 10 teams and what are their examples of bad luck? I seriously don’t think you could find even one that’s close to comparable.

            Flippy,

You can say that all you want about if only this happened or only that happened...but here is the hard cold truth from ESPN STATS (Twitter):

The Steelers are the 3rd team to start 7-2-1 or better through 10 games & fail to reach the playoffs since the current playoff format was adopted in 1990.

The other 2 teams were the 1995 Raiders (8-2) and 1993 Dolphins (8-2), who both lost QBs to injury.

In other words since 1990 the Steelers are the first team to go 7-2-1 and not make the playoffs without losing their starting QB.

That reality needs to sink in for Steeler nation. It really shows how inept this franchise was this season.

Thats exactly my point. How the heck do you start at 7-2-1 and not make the playoffs?

Then again, we were also the team that started out 1-2-1 giving us almost 0 chance of making the playoffs. If we all would have just agreed we were the 1-2-1 team, this would be easier to rationalize.

vikes, redskins, dolphins, browns, titans, falcons, panthers................ok, 7 not 10

redskins were on their 4 qb and still in the mix last week with far less talent then us
browns lost/tied 4 games by a play or two, or fumble, call, missed/made fg
vikes injuries to rb, lost 2 games by one score
titans back up qb for play in game, lost 2 games by 1 point
carolina injury to cam, missed 2 pt against detroit, lost 5 games by 1 score
falcons lost 4 games by 1 score
dolphins lost 3 by 1 score
just to name a few off the top of my head
and i am sure all of them had a turnover or bad call go against them

IMHO, these donÂ’t compare because of the multitude of issues weÂ’ve had. The sheer volume of INTs and missed FGs/PATs happened in epic fashion for us. Add in the challenges, the penalties, etc and we were worse than the Bad News Bears.

The sheer volume of mistakes is at a level with this team that I wouldnÂ’t believe it if I hadnÂ’t seen it myself.

I think these other other teams had some bad luck. Our bad luck was at a completely different level.

i guess i would agree with us having a variety of ways to piss games away but i truly believe most of those issues could have been dealt with if we had a competent HC
