Steelers Drop to Middle of the Pack

#16 in the NFL in total number of penalties.

    96 penalties for 877 yds

Worst: KC 125 penalties for 1027 yds

.....there will be a few that won't give Tomlin credit for the turn around. 'standard is the standard' and such...

Huge shout out to MT for having us at the "middle of the pack" in penalties.

well, this isn't the first time he started off with a buttload of flags and worked it back to average by end of the season.

I would have hoped he learned from this previously.

so i'll give him credit for going from worst to average. but i'd rather start the season with a september to remember. we've had a bunch of those recently - but for all the wrong reasons....

Some of you run your mouth without facts. Look up Tomlin coached teams and penalties. Then I will let you put your foot in your own mouth once you see the results.

I'm sure Tomlin spends hours personally teaching his players how to commit penalties. You guys are really a piece of work

First, technique is taught by the position coaches not the head coach. The head coach is probably the last one to blame for execution penalties, but it's Tuesday so I guess it is blame Tomlin for penalties day.

I only have to go back to last year. didn't we start with like 12 penalties against the browns? Didn't we follow that game up with around another dozen in week 2? I recall us being in the top 5 in penalties for september. If my memory is faulty I'm happy to acknowledge that. Last year I remember MT addressing the excessive penalties, saying it had to be worked on and I believe the Steelers finished the season much better per game but because of the early sloppy play - finished in the middle of the pack.

If that's what the stats say - then this year appears to be a repeat.

so kudos to Mike for fixing the problem last year. I guess kudos for fixing it this year. But september for the steelers this year sucked as well. Even coach T agrees with me when he called it the 'stench of september'.

I'm not sure what's so controversial about desiring that week in and week out the Steelers have less penalties with the random 'slop game' (it's football after all) - as opposed to starting the season with a huge amount per game and having the head coach not only have to address it, but state they need to focus on reducing penalties in order to win. Didn't Tomlin say that last year?

Am I a piece of work for agreeing with the coach?

As a possible explanation, (not excuse), the Steelers defense had a lot of faces in new positions; Edmunds, Davis, Burnett, Burns. Dupree was also good for a couple of penalties a game early in the season, Villaneuva also struggled early on with holding penalties, and the refs were calling according to the new rules.

Guess we were about the only team that had players in new positions, and had OL who had to learn to adjust to the new rules.

Guess we'll give the position coaches all the credit for the "turnaround" then. I'll have to take back the shoutout I gave to MT earlier in the thread.

and all teams run the same schemes, and were trying install new sub packages based on DBs that some considered 'raw'.

Three of Tomlin last 6 teams finished in the top 10 in least amount of penalties the rest around the middle. Don't go by the narrative that they are not discipline, do your own research sir.

The narrative I’ve been on for some time now is a slow Steelers start and having to turn it on later in the year. It frustrates me to no end that we’ve started the last two years sluggish. I think an excessive amount of penalties in sept is a causal factor to a slow start.

That slow start, combined with the three game slide has put a playoff run in serious jeopardy. The end of the year stat for penalties is also misleading in my opinion. What’s the stat for success in the playoffs when a team has to climb out of a sept hole? It’s like a defense that is top 5 against the run and bottom 5 against the pass. That typically means no one is bothering to run against them. If a team is at the bottom in penalties for 8 games, at the top for the next 8 - that sounds like an 8-8 season and no games in January - yet overall penalties for the year is middle of the pack.

I expect a well coached, disciplined team to be in the top 10 in penalties committed most weeks. At least a team with playoff aspirations. I’ll make an allowance for the occasional outlier game, but not a bad month of excessive flags that require a change of some sort. In my opinion, that’s a coaching failure.

So sad that you would make this up for your objective 2013, 2012 they was ranked 5 and 6.
