I'd say that maybe the biggest factor is organizational philosophy and stability.

It starts at the top and permeates the entire franchise. It is the reason why there have been only 3 coaches since 1969. It is the reason why there is no panic when the team starts 1-2-1.

Inside the offices they expect it, and follow the course. A spring when vets barely see the field and the team is more interested in checking out Matthew Thomas and Ola Odeniyi (sp?). A battle between Josh Dobbs and Landry Jones. Choosing who will be the number 4 RB between Ridley and Touissant.

The team knows that a rusty Ben will lead a rusty team to a slow September. They don't overreact when it happens. The team gels in October and starts to hit its stride in November.

We don't have to like or agree with the idea, but at least we should not be surprised when it happens - the way many always seem shocked that the Steelers are not going after the top free agents on day one.
