    It's Panthers (short) Week!

    Week 10 Injury Report (Panthers)

    The Steelers didn’t practice on Monday, not a huge surprise coming off the win over the Ravens on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.

    But even without practicing, the NFL requires teams to submit a practice report, which in this case is just an estimation of a player’s status if the team were to have practiced.

    The Steelers take on the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night at Heinz Field, and at the start of the week appear to be a team on the mend.

    Coach Mike Tomlin addressed injuries during his weekly press conference, which was moved up a day because of the Thursday game.

    “From an injury standpoint, not a lot of information as we sit here,” said Coach Mike Tomlin. “First let me say there are not a lot of significant injuries. If there were, we would have clarity. There are bumps and bruises associated with play. James Washington got his knee banged. It’s being looked at. Daniel McCullers an ankle. Ryan Switzer an ankle. Of course, Ben (Roethlisberger) got the wind knocked out of him in game.

    “All of those and others will continued to be monitored. It may affect practice availability in some form or fashion. It may not. I am just giving you a list of potential things. It’s just we haven’t had our feet on the ground long enough to give you any real information. I wouldn’t read too much into that. What you should read into is practice participation. That’s always our guide in terms of availability and it will be particularly in a week that is as short as this one.”

    Tomlin also said that he is open to Marcus Gilbert, who missed the last two games, working in practice tomorrow and that Gilbert is also open to it.

      Ben Roethlisberger no fan of short weeks after Ravens games

      Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was already playing with a broken finger, and then he had to play the Ravens.

      So now might not be the best time to ask him about his thoughts on Thursday night games.

      The Steelers host the Panthers this week, and Roethlisberger is just trying to recover after a physical game.

      “I’m sure the fans like [Thursday night games]; they like seeing football as often as they can,” he said during his weekly show on 93.7 FM. “Players? (Sighs) It’s like, ‘Oh here we go, short week, especially after a Baltimore game where you’re physically beat up.’

      “I guess the only nice thing about it is you have the weekend off.”

      Roethlisberger had to take a play off Sunday, after having the wind knocked out of him by Za'Darius Smith. But when Roethlisberger discusses his injuries they always sound like a near-death experience anyway, and he’s not thrilled about playing another good defense (the Panthers rank 11th in total defense) this week.

      “Football is a physical game, you’ll always be a little bit sore, but everyone knows the Ravens game is different,” Roethlisberger said. “It’s crazy physical, and you’re sore. If you give us a Thursday game you wish it was after a game that won’t be physical juggernaut slugfest. But it is what it is, and we will just get ready to go as best we can.”

      It sounds like he’s asking for more Browns games, but they already had both of those this season.

              Week 10 Injury Report (Panthers)

              The Steelers were back to work on Tuesday, preparing on a short week to take on the Carolina Panthers at Heinz Field on Thursday night.

              Tackle Marcus Gilbert, who has missed the last two games with a knee injury, didn’t practice. With Gilbert not working, it allowed Matt Feiler to get more reps with the first team offense, something that will be beneficial if he has to start on Thursday night.

              “It’s huge,” said Feiler of getting the reps. “Making sure we are on the same page and laying down a foundation for what we are doing.

              “I think it keeps my mind focused better, quicker. It keeps my mind focused on what I have to do and keeps me mentally prepared.”

              Feiler has started the last two games at right tackle, and in both instances James Conner has had over 100 yards rushing.

              “I think it speaks volumes for how everyone works and that we are all in this together,” said Feiler.

              James Washington, who said he couldn’t recall when he injured his knee in the Ravens game but that he felt pain on the plane afterwards, expects to play on Thursday night and was a full participant on Tuesday.

              Washington was inactive two weeks ago, a healthy scratch, but played last week. Ben Roethlisberger said he was pleased with Washington’s performance against the Ravens and likes what the young receiver brings to the table.

              “He’s a guy that works hard,” said Roethlisberger. “You don’t really have to get on him. I think he gets on himself enough. I think it would be one thing if he came in here with a different attitude, but that’s not who he is so that is really beneficial for him and all of us.”

              Roethlisberger didn't practice on Tuesday, listed out with his finger injury that didn't hamper him against the Ravens, as well as a coach's decision to give him the day off.

              Ryan Switzer, ankle, was limited, as was Antonio Brown, which was a coach's decision. Daniel McCullers didn't practice on Tuesday with an ankle injury.

                  Thomas Davis: Current Panthers team is “most talented set of guys I’ve been around”

                  The Carolina Panthers made the Super Bowl just three seasons ago but linebacker Thomas Davis believes the current iteration of the team may be even more talented.

                  According to David Newton of ESPN.com, Davis was responding to an earlier comment from quarterback Cam Newton about the overall talent of the current Panthers roster. Newton had said it may not be the most talented team he’s been a part of while noting he felt the group was “meshing and linking up perfectly.”

                  Davis elected to disagree with his teammate on the first part of his statement.

                  “He’s been on a more talented team than this one?” Davis asked. “I’ve been around a lot of Cam teams, other than at Auburn, and they weren’t that talented down there either. But this might be his most talented team. I don’t know what he’s talking about.

                  “From my observations, being a part of the 2015 team, athletically, speed-wise, from that standpoint in particularly on the offensive side, this is definitely the most talented set of guys I’ve been around.”

                  While the 2018 version of the Panthers already has more losses on its schedule than the 2015 version did all season long, the current version is still playing at a high level. Carolina has won five of their last six games and have scored 78 points over the last two weeks against Baltimore and Tampa Bay. The group may be more dynamic offensively than their 2015 counterparts as Christian McCaffrey, Curtis Samuel and D.J. Moore provide some offensive pop alongside Greg Olsen and Devin Funchess.

                  However, the current defensive group may not be quite as skilled. Davis is 35 years old and the entire starting secondary from the Super Bowl team is long gone. The 2015 Panthers ranked sixth in both yards and points allowed. The current group ranks 11th and 12th, respectively, in both categories.

                  At 6-2 the Panthers have hung with the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South and still have both matchups with their division rival to come in Weeks Fifteen and Seventeen.

                      Torrey Smith out, four Panthers questionable for Thursday night

                      The Panthers will play without wide receiver Torrey Smith against the Steelers on Thursday night.

                      Smith has been ruled out for the third straight week with a knee injury. A short week was always going to be tough for a return to action and Smith’s absence from practice the last two days all but assured he’d be missing another game.

                      Devin Funchess, D.J. Moore, Jarius Wright, Curtis Samuel and Damiere Byrd will be Carolina’s wideouts.

                      Four other Panthers received questionable designations for Thursday night, including center Ryan Kalil. Kalil has not practiced due to an ankle injury and head coach Ron Rivera indicated he will be a game-time call against Pittsburgh. Tyler Larsen would start if Kalil can’t play.

                      Rivera expects defensive end Mario Addison and safety Eric Reid to play despite shoulder injuries. Linebacker David Mayo (groin) rounds out the group of questionable players.

                          Week 10 Injury Report (Panthers)

                          The Steelers will be without tackle Marcus Gilbert for the third straight week when they take on the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night at Heinz Field. Gilbert is still hampered by a knee injury and with the short week was unable to get on the field and practice this week.

                          With Gilbert out, Matt Feiler will make his third straight start at right tackle. Feiler was able to get first team reps in practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, something that was extremely valuable to him.

                          “It’s huge,” said Feiler. “Making sure we are on the same page and laying down a foundation for what we are doing.

                          “I think it keeps my mind focused better, quicker. It keeps my mind focused on what I have to do and keeps me mentally prepared.”

                          James Washington was a full participant in practice for the second straight day after injuring his knee against the Ravens, and said he expects to play on Thursday night.

                          “I feel good,” said Washington. “I am ready to go. I am good to go.”

                          Washington had two receptions for 17 yards against the Ravens, but also missed on the first pass thrown his way. After that play Ben Roethlisberger had a talk with the rookie, and then went back to him, which helped Washington.

                          “That was good for me,” said Washington. “I was kind of down on myself. I was upset and mad. He gave me a little advice and next thing you know we were connected.”

                          Washington admits he still has to keep working to get to the level where Roethlisberger wants him, but being a rookie working with a 15-year veteran who has seen it all can be an adjustment.

                          “It’s coming along,” said Washington. “He wants perfection, and for myself I feel like I am not there yet, but I am working as hard as I can to get there for him. I watch film. I come in and meet with the coaches. It’s being in that environment with him and getting to know how he wants me to play.

                          “It has its ups and downs with him being so knowledgeable of the game. I am trying to get to that point, studying him. Talking to AB (Antonio Brown), just picking their brains and seeing how they think. As long as I am showing the coaches I am trying and giving 110 percent every day.”

                          Daniel McCullers missed practice for the second straight day and has been ruled out for Thursday night’s game as well.
