What do yinz think about the way the Steelers allocate cap dollars?
Personally, I think the places they spend money makes it challenging to be competitive.
Clearly guys like Hilton ($555k), Conner ($754k), JuJu ($954k), Jesse ($1.9m), Vance ($2.1m), AV ($4m), DD ($5.6m), and Joe Haden ($11.9m) are really good value for their play/positions.
There's other guys at good value on early contracts with upside.
But the problem I have is the money committed overall to the OLine/RB and Dline. If we pay a premium for OLine, so be it, but then they should be able to make a mediocre RB look great and we shouldn't have to pay for both. I think some of our OLine feels like it's on the high side. They do a good job, but I'd rather invest in getting more QB pressure or better DB play which can help generate pressure.
Re: the DLine, it feels like we're overpaying for 3-4 DEs that aren't able to make the impact that we need for that level of salary. Why do we have so much committed to Heyward and Tuitt. They just don't produce at a high enough level consistently. I could see if they were JJ Watt, but they aren't. They are also not eating up blockers freeing up our OLBs to be great and difference makers. If we're going to run a 3-4, the OLBs have to be game changers and they're not. We're overvaluing good 3-4 Dlinemen and asking them to rush the QB at the expense of helping the OLB's succeed.
I think if we allowed Smitty and Kiesel to go after the QB like the current DEs we have, they'd have put up 10+ sacks every season because they were better athletes. But we coached them to control gaps and blockers and they freed the OLBs to make plays. Same with Hargrave, he's got to keep the ILBs clean and eat blocks. But that's another thread because our NT + ILBs are relatively cheap, but not great value because they're aren't really good imho.
What do you think? I would like to see us find and invest in more Joe Hadens on D. If we can get really good in coverage, any old front 7 will work. But we're in this funky predicament where we're spending too much on O and skill players and then we're half in on the DBs and half in on the DL, and seem confused in our investing for a 3-4 D.
