Why should James Harrison be DEFENSIVE MVP for 2008/2009?

Why?

Why shouldn't JAMES HARRISON be, simply, NFL MVP?

Who out there, this season, has dominated as many games, changed the outcome of as many games...or flat out played better than James Harrison?

The dude should be mentioned as the NFL MVP at the least.

I'm too lazy to google, but has a defensive player ever been awarded the honor? If so, who was it and when was it?

I guess like most I just concede that an offensive player will win it because that's what the media and most fans seem to want...offenseoffenseoffense.

The last denfensive player was LT back in 1986. msnbc.com had an article about this, why can't a defensive player win. It didn't specifically mention JH, but it states how the offensive players being considered are not consistent (Warner), or won't bring they teams to the playoffs (Brees).

Hmm. I guess some people have different ways of judging MVP. I thought MVP wasn't just who had the best stats, but who was most valuable to their team.

IMO the MVP is someone who gets great stats, forms an integral part of the offense or defense, and would cause the team to really suffer if he went down. Don't get me wrong, James Harrison's a freak of nature, but I'm not sure he's MVP worthy. If he went down, it wouldn't be the end of the world for our defense because we have so many other great players.

That's why for MVP of the Steelers I'm leaning more toward Moore, league-wise I'd say it's either Warner or Turner.

Just a reminder, James was MVP of the Steelers last year and this year he has been even better! He leads our mindset, intimidation-wise. If he goes down, I think we would lose our lofty perch as #1 in all major defensive categories and possibly lose some games. In my opinion, he is that important!

For NFL MVP, there are no outrageously dominating players in the league on O this year so with a few more high impact performance, he might make the discussion. Screw Albert Haynesworth.

I know I've sworn Pro Football Weekly off before, but here is another source for some MVP talk. Harrison has made a nice climb over the weeks, last week he wasn't in the top ten. I like how Woodley got an honorable mention.

Several candidates looked rather ordinary last week

I was leaning toward leaving the No. 1 slot empty, because no one earned it in Week 13. Kurt Warner and Drew Brees both bungled their way to three-interception days in what were both damaging losses for their respective teams. For the Cardinals, they hurt themselves in terms of playoff seeding and the Saints look like they’re all but barred from playing into January. Adrian Peterson made a strong case for himself, crushing the Bears for 131 yards and a TD, but then again, he always shreds that team. He was rewarded with a rise up one notch, but Warner’s overall season has been stronger, and, in addition, quarterbacks normally get the edge for this award.

Other potential front-runners hit a roadblock, too. Clinton Portis is aching with a couple of injuries. In Week 12, he was able to overcome the health issues, but this time, pain won out. The Jets’ once-dominant run defense was overpowered by Peyton Hillis, a rookie seventh-round pick who is a converted fullback, which cast doubt on NT Kris Jenkins’ qualifications. Finally, Peyton Manning and the Colts’ offense were so inept that they didn’t even score a TD against the collapsing Browns.

Does anybody want this thing?

Just a week ago it appeared Brees and Warner were going head-to-head the rest of the way and one of them was almost assured of winning this thing. As I look at the state of the race today, it’s plausible that neither of them will win the MVP award, and it’s particularly unlikely for Brees, since the Saints’ playoff chances have sunk to an all-time low following a loss to the division-rival Bucs.

This fight has a few more serious competitors on the verge of breaking through now that a slew of poor performances have taken their toll.

1. Cardinals QB Kurt Warner — He’ll be back to his typical 300-yard self when the Rams come calling in Week 14.

2. Vikings RB Adrian Peterson — First career rushing title is within reach now that he has built an 83-yard lead on Portis.

3. Saints QB Drew Brees — Still on pace to break Dan Marino’s record, but he’d trade all the yards for a couple extra wins in a heartbeat.

4. Falcons RB Michael Turner — Set a career-high in carries, toting the rock 31 times, as he pounded away at his former team, the Chargers, in Atlanta’s second straight road victory. With the help of Turner, the Falcons have a real shot at double-digit wins, which is stunning.

5. Redskins RB Clinton Portis — Portis’ pain in the neck and knees knocked him out early vs. the Giants.

6. Jets NT Kris Jenkins — Jenkins wasn’t the player we’ve grown used to seeing. In fact, he disappeared against the Broncos, as the Jets allowed a running back to gain 100 yards against them for the first time this season.

7. Steelers OLB James Harrison — The Steelers’ playmaker on defense continues his habit of terrifying quarterbacks. In the second half on Sunday, he sacked the Patriots’ Matt Cassel twice and forced two fumbles, which were both recovered by Pittsburgh.
8. Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware — The only thing capable of stopping him is the knee hyperextension he suffered vs. the Seahawks on Thanksgiving. Three sacks in Week 13 place Ware alone in the league lead (15).

9. Colts QB Peyton Manning — Not a great week by any stretch for Manning (zero TDs, two picks, one fumble lost), but the Colts found a way to win anyway, which should be a frightening development for other potential AFC playoff contenders.

10. Jets RB Thomas Jones — Jones already has a career-high in TDs (13), which puts him in a tie with Turner and two others for most in the league.

Honorable mention: Broncos QB Jay Cutler, Titans DT Albert Haynesworth, Falcons WR Roddy White, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin, Giants QB Eli Manning, Falcons DE John Abraham, Bucs MLB Barrett Ruud, Cowboys QB Tony Romo, Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald, Panthers DE Julius Peppers, Vikings DT Kevin Williams, Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha, Giants RB Brandon Jacobs, Buccaneers QB Jeff Garcia, Dolphins OLB Joey Porter, Titans RB Chris Johnson, Texans WR Andre Johnson, Ravens MLB Ray Lewis, Steelers OLB LaMarr Woodley.

Got to agree with that! Payten has done nothing to deserve this recognition!

Harrison, week in, week out, has made plays that determine the outcome of the game.
