He's not getting the missed time back. He effectively lost what he would have made thus far this season. He will have to make considerably more money next season in order to make up for that. He will be one year older, and going by the statistics for NFL running backs, considerably closer to the end of his career.

Unless he gets a whole lot more guaranteed money than I think he will get, he's botched this big-time.

But he can always fall back on his rap career.

No he wont, if he was to make 47 million thru 2021, if he signs the same deal next season he will would 56 million thru 2022. He is probably going to get a better deal thru free agency but let's just say he gets the same deal the Steelers offered him, please explain how he lost money? He would be collecting an extra 9 million before signing the same deal, that's not losing money by my math.

It's not your math so much as your logic that's faulty.

Bell has forfeited around $3.4 million by missing the first four games of the 2018 season. If he misses the next two, he will have forfeited nearly $5.1 million. Assuming he comes in after week 6, plays this year and then signs the same deal for next season that he was offered year, you're right that he could make around $56 million through 2022. But if he had played all season this season, and then signed that deal, he could have made over $61 million through 2022. Even if he gets a better deal than what he was offered this year, he could have earned $5.1 million more than he will now be able to earn over the four-year period, simply by playing all the games this season.

I don't know what he'll be offered - but more often than not, it's far better to take money up front than to wait. I deal with contracts all the time in my line of work and I'm often confronted by those who believe it's better to keep holding out for more. The problem is that once you reach close to the limit, you simply can't go so far beyond that to make up for what you'd lose by waiting. It's possible someone will break the bank on bell and give him 80 million. If that happens his strategy is sound. That seems unlikely to me however and by my math he's just squandering cash at this point.

The article is not talking about if he signed the franchised tag week 1, obviously if he signed the tag week 1 instead of 7 he would make more, the article is talking about him signing the Steelers contract offer before he was tagged. So if he plays for any amount of money on the tag and signs a deal equal to or greater than the Steelers offer he will make more.
