I really think we have to go back to just finding the best players regardless of position and adapt the system to the best talent we can find.
I think going pure BPA is probably the best long term strategy. But it means that rookies will sometimes sit their first year.

But I don't understand the rational for firing Colbert. I find it unlikely that a new GM would be an improvement on Colbert, even though we've missed on some high picks on D lately.

It's hard to really evaluate without looking at where everyone was picked and what the expected production is for players at those draft positions. But, my guess is that Colber's probably done better than expected with players selected at their draft positions. I bet that expected value drops dramatically outside of the top 10 picks or so. And the one guy we hit on that was elite is unlikely to play again.

In a way, we would have benefited from having a season or two of terrible performance in the last few years. Then, we would have had a better chance to pick up an elite player to help carry the D. Like when we were just bad enough to draft Ben under Cowher...although even then we wouldn't have been bad enough to get a franchise QB if the Browns were smart enough to take a QB over a TE.
We shouldn’t get rid of Colbert. But we’ve seen now for a 5-6 year period of not having a good defensive scheme. And a decade of not finding real secondary players. Colbert needs to be man enough to see these short comings and man enough to do something about it.

1.Go outside the organization and get a legit DC.

      2. Admit you can’t identify secondary talent and hire someone who can help you to identify secondary talent.

Colbert needs to get off his high horse.

        I agree. I didn't mean KC, I meant KB.
Tomlin: Let's unleash hell and "mop the floor" with the competition.

Thanks, that makes more sense (although I don't think they would do it until the end of the season if at all).

I think that's what will happen if we get rid of Butler.

Colbert should stick at what he is good at. Next draft he should only choose receivers. Then, in a year or two when those picks turn into studs, trade them for known quantity defenders.
