Coming to Kennywood Park in 2019: Steelers Country land, Steel Curtain roller coaster

    Thursday, Jul 19, 2018 12:15 PM

    ‘Steelers Country’ coming to Kennywood

On Thursday, Kennywood Park announced that Steelers Country, an immersive land that celebrates the Steelers and includes exclusive merchandise, skill games and food locations, as well as a record-breaking roller coaster called “Steel Curtain”, will open in 2019.

“Being the first park to collaborate with a professional sports franchise on not only a themed area, but also a pulse-pounding, high-flying roller coaster is a great honor that fits in with Kennywood’s longstanding tradition of innovation,” said Kennywood General Manager Jerome Gibas. “For that franchise to be our hometown Steelers, the most successful team in America’s most popular sport, it’s a sure touchdown!”

Throughout Steelers Country, fans will have the opportunity to join in on familiar game day moments, including running through the team’s entry tunnel, seeing how they measure up in practice drills and checking scores and highlights on Steelers Country’s giant video screen.

“We are very excited about the partnership with Kennywood,” said Steelers Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ryan Huzjak. “Being able to connect the Pittsburgh Steelers with a family attraction like Kennywood is a natural fit for both organizations, and we are thrilled about the tradition and longstanding history the Steelers and Kennywood provide to families in and around the city of Pittsburgh.

The towering “Steel Curtain” roller coaster will rule Kennywood’s skyline. With a record-breaking 9 inversions, 197 foot-tall loop, and 220-foot maximum height, “Steel Curtain” is an adrenaline rush like no other, speeding across 4,000 feet of track at 75 miles per hour. Designed by S&S Worldwide, “Steel Curtain” will break a Pennsylvania record (tallest roller coaster), a North American record (most inversions), and a world record (tallest inversion). The colossal steel structure of the coaster will serve as a landmark addition to the park and a high-energy entry point welcoming guests to Steelers Country.

Along with Huzjak, former Steelers defensive lineman Chris Hoke and Steely McBeam were on hand to celebrate the announcement.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I wonder where they are going to fit Steelers Country Land? Or, what they will be removing?

Yes. Definitely a burgh thing. But I have lived away from there for 30 years. To this day if someone says Kennywood's open, I check my zipper.

An inside look at Kennywood Park’s plans for their Steelers-themed roller coaster

The Steelers will be the first team in the league with a ride dedicated to them when Kennywood opens its “Steel Curtain” roller coaster in 2019.

If you’ve never been to Kennywood Park, you might want to make plans for a day out next year. After the amusement park unveiled plans to build a Pittsburgh Steelers-themed roller coaster called “The Steel Curtain” in 2019 — a ride that will be the centerpiece of an entire section of the park dedicated to the Black-and-gold — it’s set to be a must-visit attraction for Steelers fans when it opens.

Located in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, a short 20-minute ride from Pittsburgh, Kennywood Park broke ground on the zone to be known as “Steelers Country” on Thursday, and were joined by former Steelers’ defensive lineman Chris Hoke for the ceremony.

Once it’s complete, Pittsburgh will become the only team in the NFL with a family attraction dedicated just to them. As Kennywood Park general manager Jerome Gibas commented:

“Being the first park to collaborate with a professional sports franchise on not only a themed area, but also a pulse-pounding, high-flying roller coaster is a great honor that fits in with Kennywood’s longstanding tradition of innovation. For that franchise to be our hometown Steelers, the most successful team in America’s most popular sport, it’s a sure touchdown!”

In a move that will hopefully appease long-time fans of the Log Jammer ride like Pittsburgh Dad, Steelers Country will sit on the same site where the popular water ride which closed last year was located. In its place, Kennywood Park will build a record-breaking roller coaster set to be the tallest inversion coaster in the world — with more inversions than any other in North America and one that will be the tallest roller coaster in Pennsylvania when completed.

Designed by S&S Worldwide, The Steel Curtain has a record-breaking 9 inversions and a 197-foot-high loop. Overall the track is 4,000 foot long and passengers will travel at 75 miles per hour.

Alongside the new ride, Steelers Country will also feature a variety of merchandise stalls, skill games and several new food locations including a Steelers-themed tailgating area. Fans will be able to see how they measure up in practice drills, perfect their touchdown dances and check scores and highlights on giant video screens.

Seems cool, but a little on the small side. I haven't been to Kennywood for 20+ years, and this will actually get me to come back some time.

The Log Jammer is gone!!!! Seriously? WTF?

I remember when I was a kid, sneaking leftover cups on the log jammer, sitting behind my friends, getting a scoop of water and dumping it on them. We'd come off the Log Jammer wetter than most people coming off the Raging Rapids. Good times.

Speaking of a little on the small side, look at how thin Chris Hoke is in the groundbreaking photo...

I've only been to Kennywood once. I took my son there about a decade or so ago. He's 17 now, so he was a little early elementary school guy back then. Since it was part of a Steeler game weekend, it was fall, and they had a Halloween themed haunt going on in the park that night. There were creepy clowns everywhere, and it freaks him out to this day. My 13 year old daughter loves the new "It" movie, but he refused to see it, and I think it's due to that childhood Kennywood experience.

That is a weak azz rolllercoaster.

Too many twist and inversions and not enough drops.

The Steel Phantom was a beast but it had so many loops they kept shutting it down due to neck injuries. The drop on the Steel Phantom was insane. I almost passed out when I road it my senior year in HS.

I see the the same thing happening with this ride when it comes to the inversions.
