Roethlisberger isn’t thinking about his next contract

Roethlisberger isn’t thinking about his next contract[/h]Posted by Mike Florio on June 17, 2018, 6:31 PM EDT

A year removed from musing about retirement, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger plans to keep going. Which means that he could indeed be going beyond the duration of his current contract, which expires after the 2019 season.
Roethlisberger says he’s not thinking about that.

“I have two years on my contract. I’m not going to be one to sit here and worry about my contract Roethlisberger said Sunday at a football camp in Pittsburgh. “That’s not my job. My job is to play football. I’ll let my representation, the Steelers worry about all that stuff. To me, it’s all about going out and playing now. I think there are a lot more, maybe a lot more important people who need to get their deals done now. For me to do it two years out, if it doesn’t make sense for the team, I’m not going to sit here and worry about it.”
That could be viewed as a not-so-subtle slap at Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers who also has two years left on his contract, who makes only $150,000 more per year on average that Roethlisberger, who has fewer Super Bowl wins that Roethlisberger, and who seems to be very motivated to get a new contract.
“I care about record-breaking Super Bowl wins and things like that — that’s more important to me,” Roethlisberger said.
“It’s important, too, to understand as quarterback of this team, sometimes you almost have to leave a little bit of money behind for other guys,” Roethlisberger added. “That’s not my job, that’s not my thing to worry about. That’s why I have agents.”
Still, with the top of the market at $30 million per year, Roethlisberger has every right to feel underpaid. Even if he’s not saying or doing anything to suggest that he’d like to have his contract adjusted.

Wow, that's refreshing (and a little surprising) to hear from a QB. Hope his next contract reflects that.

He is saying all the right things...

and I definitely hope he takes a hometown discount since he has made a boat load already.

Agree. And I think he will. He's never been overly aggressive with his contracts. I think he still appreciates that the team stuck with him through the misery of the assault allegations against him. And he has a wife from the Burgh and kids with her. No need to uproot them to seek out a few million more when he's already set for life 5 times over.

I still think Ben just plays out the final two years of his current contract then rides off into the sunset.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I could see that happening if at least one of those last two seasons ends in a ring. But if he doesn't get his 3rd ring, I think he'll play another contract - assuming he's healthy and the team is still contending.

Didn't he say he wanted to break records? Terry Bradshaw has 4 rings and Ben only has 2. I think he stays even if they win another in the next year or two.

Sounds like a man who's made peace with the fact that he's on the back 9.

I think that he'll keep playing if he feels good when Brady retires. You'd have to think he'd like a season or two without the GOAT in the same conference.

I don't know what to think of it. It is refreshing to hear that kind of talk - but there is part of me that is cynical. If I were to be honest in my thoughts about Ben - I'd have to separate it into two categories. Big Ben the QB, and Ben Roethlisberger the person.

Big Ben gets nothing but praise, high marks and will be in the HOF. He's a winner, franchise QB, worth every penny, tough as nails and I hope he plays for far more than 2 more years.

Ben the person may not be the same as Ben the QB. He's had too many incidents in the past, too many stories about bad behavior in restaurants, etc. Granted, much of that was before marriage and children. Maybe he's grown up. So I hope his comments are sincere because I want our QB focused on winning superbowls - not just winning a record breaking contract. but I carry some skepticism, can't deny that......

I think Ben is going to be the perfect gentleman and teammate now that Rudolph is on the team.

He knows this time it might be for real.

So he will say all the right things and do all the right things.

Yeah... I’m thinking this is the Rudolph effect.

Ben had a wild youth, which I would guess was no different than the average NFL guy.

It's there anything to suggest that there's been any of that behavior in years?
