Measurable Improvement on Defense

You literally have no idea what safeties are supposed to do in Cover 2 (or have any idea what a route tree is as evidenced by the other thread when you called it a corner route). Yes, Higgins went slightly to Mitchell's side WELL AFTER THE CATCH but NOT because Mitchell was out of position but because he was doing what he was supposed to do, take the deepest guy on his side. (BTW, That is what good OCs do, run complimentary routes that pull safeties away from where you want to go in order to create a hole). And, yes, he was late recognizing the throw to the short middle but just like the Haden play, you are ignoring the obvious to skewer Mitchell. Watt blew the coverage. Or, if you prefer, Butler should not have had Watt on him alone with no middle help. Either is a much more valid and accurate placement of the majority of the blame than on Mitchell.Last edited by WB Tarleton; 01-02-2018, 02:36 AM.Comment

No one is arguing that Watt was beat. Kizer saw the mismatch of LB on WR and went there.
Cover 2 in trail man or whatever doesnt change the fact that the ball has already been thrown and Mitchell is still breaking on the corner/out route(no idea because receiver never finished the route)
The point that i'm trying to make and have tried to make is that Mitchell doesnt have good ball recognition skills.
This is evident in the above screenshot.
Its not Mitchells fault but he shouldnt be given pass after pass.
I point to his statistics on the year of 2 passes defensed and 0 INT's.
Mitchell is not getting beat but as an NFL starting safety his contributions are clearly lacking.
(FS)Kevin Byard 16 PD 8 INT
(FS)Jordan Poyer 13-5
(SS)Micah Hyde 13-5
(SS)Mike Adams 12-2
(FS)Harrison Smith 12-5
(SS)John Johnson 11-1
(FS)D.J. Swearinger 10-4
(SS)Antoine Bethea 9-5
(SS)Patrick Chung 9-1
(SS)Sean Davis 8-3
Obviously there are different factors contributing (games played, snaps, type os defense etc...) but Mitchell in my opinion doesnt make this defense better.Last edited by pittpete; 01-02-2018, 04:03 PM.sigpicComment
