Ryan Shazier reportedly avoids worst-case scenario, suffers spinal contusion after being hospitalized with scary back injury

Ryan Shazier avoided what could have been a life-altering injury Monday night.
The 25-year-old Steelers linebacker suffered a spinal contusion and some swelling after being hospitalized following a collision with Bengals receiver Josh Malone that forced Shazier to initially have no feeling in his lower body, according to ESPN. (https://twitter.com/AKinkhabwala/status/937920982534246400)
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (https://twitter.com/gerrydulac/status/937912469229592577) reported Shazier's injury is "better than what it could have been."
The injury is reportedly similar to one former Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox suffered in 2002. Maddox was eventually able to make a full recovery once the swelling went down.
The Steelers announced in a statement early Tuesday morning that Shazier will not need surgery after getting a CT scan and an MRI done, but he will have to stay overnight at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The Steelers did not reveal Shazier's diagnosis.
"Ryan's injury will not require surgery at this time, and he continues to improve," Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said in a statement. "He will stay overnight to continue evaluations with the hopes of returning to Pittsburgh on Tuesday."
Shazier's injury initially sent shockwaves throughout the sports world, with teammates, players and fans all worried for Shazier's well-being after it appeared the linebacker was potentially paralyzed from the waist down.

Shazier had to be carted off the field after he led with his helmet on a tackle attempt early in the first quarter of the Steelers’ 23-20 win over the Bengals.
Shazier drilled his helmet into the side of Malone, causing his neck to buckle and his legs to go limp.
Shazier immediately grabbed his lower back and remained motionless on the ground for several moments before being taken off the field on a stretcher. He did not have feeling in his lower body, according to NFL.com (https://twitter.com/AKinkhabwala/status/937869147169607680).

Shazier immediately left the stadium in an ambulance and was taken to UC Trauma Center. He kept pointing to his waist prior to leaving, according to NFL Network. (https://twitter.com/AKinkhabwala/status/937861443923398657)
The Steelers initially refused to comment on his condition, describing his status as “unavailable.”
Shazier has quickly developed into the Steelers' top defender since being drafted in the first round in 2014. Shazier was named to his first Pro Bowl last season after recording 87 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 3 interceptions.
Shazier has managed to even improve his play this season. Entering Monday night, the Pro Bowl linebacker leads the team in tackles (87), interceptions (3), forced fumbles (2) and passes deflected (11).
Prior to the injury, Shazier was well on his way to a second straight Pro Bowl appearance and had a case to potentially be named Defensive Player of the Year as well.
Many high-profile athletes and media personnel sent their prayers to Shazier via Twitter shortly after the frightening scene unfurled.
"Prayers for my brother @RyanShazier," tweeted Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown.
"Everyone please pray for @RyanShazier and his loved ones! Can’t imagine what they’re going through right now," Lions receiver Golden Tate wrote, along with a praying hands emoji.
"Prayers up for Ryan Shazier," former Giants, Steelers receiver Plaxico Burress wrote.

"Young Lion @RyanShazier, God is able. Thoughts and prayers are with you and steeler nation," former Ravens linebacker wrote, including a praying hands emoji.
"Really hoping the best for Ryan Shazier, that didn’t look good," Mike Golic wrote.
"Praying for Ryan Shazier. Asking for others to do the same. #SteelersNation," former receiver Steve Smith Jr. wrote, including a praying hands emoji.
"Praying for a lot of ANGELS to protect @RyanShazier," former Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor wrote, along with a heart emoji.
"Praying for @RyanShazier that looked bad," Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson wrote, including a praying hands emoji.
"Prayers out to @RyanShazier! #THE," Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper wrote, along with a praying hands emoji.
"Nothing but prayers for Shazier," Hall of Fame running back and Steelers legend Jerome Bettis wrote.
"We sit from our couch and so freely critique aspects of the NFL thru a keypad. But every tackle is like flipping a coin with your life. Warriors. Absolute warriors. Prayers for @RyanShazier," sportscaster Brandon Tierney wrote.

I am very thankful for that good news! I couldn't sleep last night, even though we won the game, my heart was very heavy thinking about Ryan. He is arguably our best player on defense. What are we going to do without him? I am not feeling so optimistic anymore. Continue to get better Ryan. My prayers are with you!

The team will play the games as scheduled. Someone who is not as good as Shazier will have to step it up and Butler will have to innovate.

When I saw Shazier laying there not moving first thought that went into my mind was Gabe Riveria...yes I'm dating myself Completely different circumstances in how their injuries occurred but when Rivera was paralyzed IMO it set the defense back several years losing a 1st round pick with his ability and potential. I pray this scenario is not repeated WRT Shazier.

First I hope Shazier is safe and healthy. Second I hope he can come back and play at a high level

Steelers sent a private plane down to Florida to bring Ryan's parents to Cincy to be with him.

        Cool move.

Ryan Shazier has “some movement” in lower extremities

Posted by Mike Florio on December 5, 2017, 10:10 AM EST

Last night’s encouraging update from the Steelers omitted reference to the question of whether linebacker Ryan Shazier has movement or feeling in his legs. Apparently, he’s not yet where he needs to be regarding that critical aspect of his overall recovery.

Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Shaizer “has some movement in his lower extremities.” Per Rapoport, “the next 24-48 hours are key for increased improvement.”

This implies that there has indeed been some type of spinal-cord injury that has limited full use of his legs, at least for now. Here’s hoping that improvement will continue, and that Shazier will fully and completely recover.

Said G.M. Kevin Colbert early Tuesday: “Ryan’s injury will not require surgery at this time, and he continues to improve. He will stay overnight to continue evaluations with the hopes of returning to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.”

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Ryan Shazier still hospitalized, could return to Pittsburgh soon

Posted by Darin Gantt on December 5, 2017, 3:58 PM EST

Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier isn’t out of the woods, but he’s at least closer to going back to Pittsburgh.

The Steelers released a joint statement from doctors in both cities, saying he’s continuing to be evaluated for the spine injury suffered last night.

He will have more tests and will be monitored by neurosurgery specialists, and could return to the hospital in Pittsburgh in 24 to 48 hours.

While that’s far from being well, the fact he’s being transported closer to home is certainly a sign of progress.

Shazier was stretchered off last night, and coach Mike Tomlin said today that the linebacker was in good spirits.

If Ryan gets the full use of his legs back, it will be a tremendous relief...if there is any kind of narrowing of the spine (stenosis), he’ll most likely be done...
