    Booms and Busts

After going through my process I wanted to talk about some guys in multiple rounds I believe will have terrific NFL careers, some guys who are way overrated, and guys I think who will bust out of the league.

Lattimore and Malik Hooker-yes well beyond us but both will be elite in the NFL.  Lattimore is a true shut down corner( yes they still exist) and he will eliminate opposing teams best DBs very early in his career. Hooker is more raw but I haven't seen that kind of ball talent since Ed Reed. With Conley they formed the best secondary in tOSU history.

John Ross-He isn't just fast, the kid is special. If by some miracle he fell to the mid 20's and Steelers moved up to get him it would infuriate most of Steeler nation. But, this guy is an elite playmaker who is going to set the NFL on fire.

Pat Mahommes-best raw QB talent I have seen in many years. I know some don't like his interviews but the guy is confident and carries himself well. He makes throws no one in this league can make...throws I've never seen anyone make.  By year 3 this guy will have made an NFL team look really smart for drafting him.

Budda Baker-I like his film as much as I did Honey Badgers a couple years back when I was touting him. Undersized...ok so what the kid is a baller. I highly doubt he makes it to us in the second and I'm not quite sure I would pull the trigger on him in the first but he is going to be a VERY good safety.

Carl Lawson-He comes with a big *...his medical. Can he stay healthy? If so, I seen the film of an elite pass rusher. He is a physical, twitchy and athletic enough to be a very big deal in the NFL.

TJ Watt-This is a classic value pick in the second and a bit of a reach in the first. Lower ceiling but a strong polished football player with a football players mentality. He is going to have a very good NFL career.

Jordan Willis-The best of the second tier OLB prospects and I have him rated higher than Charles Harris. Big, fast, twitchy athlete and I think he needs to be the target of the Steelers in the second even if they have to move up to get him.

Sidney Jones-the injury will cause him to fall but this guy is a fluid cover guy who is going to have a terrific NFL career.

Jake Butt-When the Buckeyes played Michigan I had no fear of Peppers. It was Butt who was eating that tOSU D up. This guy is underrated. He is Heath Miller II. Heath may have been a more well rounded blocker but Butt is the bigger threat in the passing game. Either way he is a lunch pail, guy who is a smart route runner with soft hands. He just gets coverages and soft spots in zones. He sets up defenders and will be a steal in the third.

Joe Mixon-the best running back in this highly talented class. IMO, he is better than Zeke Elliot coming out of college. If by some miracle he is there for us in the second he is a no brainer selection.

Samaje Perine-I know this guy is a bit slow a foot and is limited but I could just see him pounding on Ds late in games brutalizing poor tired defenders in the way Bettis did back in the day.  Doesn't have Bettis footwork, but has more power.  True power back who will carve out a niche in the NFL and be very good at it.

James Conner-I think there is an elite talent in there if he pulled a Bell and lost 20 pounds. He has all the tools I look for minus the ability to make Ds respect the edge.

TJ Logan-I really like this guy and can't for the life of me figure out why he is getting slept on. Elite track speed and looks the part of a running back and not just a track guy.

    BUSTS-

Charles Harris-Despite his twitchiness I don't believe he has the anchor, physicality or the ability to shed in order to be effective at the next level. Pass.

Tim Williams-one trick pony with off the field issues. It wouldn't surprise me if we never heard of him again after the draft except to hear of his suspensions for drug violations.

Pat Elflein-C tOSU...underwhelming at the college level, a liability on the OL. 2-3 round grade?  Bust.

Derek Rivers-I know he is fast...but guys thats about it. He has some tools to rush the passer and I know the board loves him. But, I think that 40 times has blinded some scouts.  He just isn't that good...not yet thats for certain. Can a team groom him? Possibly but he isn't ready. I say pass.

Alvin Kamara-yes he is explosive but he is also inconsistent. You see occasionally flashes of brillance but more often then not you see a guy who got limited touches and doesn't look like a natural running back. I think the guy is highly overrated. He will likely find a niche as a slot or a hybrid back role but nothing warranting a second round pick.

Curtis Samuels is the better pick if thats what you are looking for.

Jordan Leggit-Another board darling. Yes, I agree the guy has some athletic traits you just can't teach. But, he is known for his poor work ethic and lack of love for the game. He didn't get the "Lazy Leggit" nickname without reason. Unless he finds the desire to play he will bust out of the league in short order.

Another interesting write-up, Shawn. For some reason, I missed this one. Funny about John Ross, I drafted him in the first when I was doing one of those draft simulators. There was still some notable defensive prospects on the board when I chose him at #30. However, like I alluded to earlier, I would strongly consider overlooking a very good defensive player to draft a potentially "great" offensive player who could have an immediate impact.

Of the guys you have listed above, Carl Lawson (just looks the part, mean and nasty) Budda Baker (thinking he might be a little bit of Earl Thomas) T.J. Watt (hoping I get a little bit of JJ and Clay Matthews) James Connor (high character guy, seems like a Larry Fitzgerald type that could rub off on others) They interest me the most.

I also agree on Derek Rivers and Tim Williams. If we draft Tim Williams - I know our front office better had done their homework. Another Jarvis Jones will not be tolerated.

As always, thanks for the information.

I have to agree with you. If a guy like Ross falls to us for whatever reason, he have to snatch him up. The Steelers brought him in for an interview so you know they are considering O even if the board isn't.

I pretty much agree with most of what you're selling. Good post.

Baker is a guy I'd be hard pressed to draft. His size is a real risk. I think he's smaller than Bob Sanders was. And Baker reminds me of Sanders minus the big hits. As great as Sanders was at S, he spent most of his career hurt. And Sanders was a phenom. But the year he was DMVP, I think that's the only season he played for more than 5 or 6 games.

Can a guy this small hold up? I'd say the risk reward isn't worth the chance until you get past round 4. I'm saying all this and I really like the guy. I'm just thinking there's such a slim chance his body can handle the NFL.
