More than 30 current and former NFL players – including Maurkice Pouncey, Marquette King, Mychal Kendricks, Navarro Bowman, Jamon Brown and Howard Jones – visited Las Vegas this weekend to participate in the inaugural “Pro Football Arm Wrestling Championship” at the MGM Hotel and Casino. Those involved could now be facing discipline from the NFL.



James Harrison and Marshawn Lynch served as co-hosts of the event. According to USA TODAY, no players sought approval from the NFL before participating in the event, which was in violation of NFL rules as it took place inside a casino.Via USA TODAY:

Wouldn't it seem a little hypocritical for the league to punish players for having an arm wrestling contest in a casino, when they just approved moving the Raiders to Sin City?

So let me get this right. The players could be in hot water for doing something at a casino in Las Vegas. The same Las Vegas where 31 of 32 owners just voted to move a franchise? The same Las Vegas where the NFL fully supports sports betting to the extent that they provide very strict guideline on injury reporting so that the guys in Vegas can get the line right?

A group of NFL players who took part in an arm wrestling event in Las Vegas over the weekend will be disciplined by the NFL.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the players will be fined for violating the league’s policy barring players from taking part in events held at casinos. NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart told Jarrett Bell of USA Today that no one from the event, which was taped for later broadcast on CBS, asked for permission but organizers disputed that account.

Steelers linebacker James Harrison, Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills, 49ers linebacker Navorro Bowman, Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey, Raiders punter Marquette King, Raiders defensive end Mario Edwards, Patriots safety Patrick Chung, and Cowboys receiver Lucky Whitehead took part in the event. Marshawn Lynch was also a participant and appears poised to join the Raiders for the 2017 season, but Rapoport reports that his current spot on the reserve/retired list will allow him to avoid a fine.

The league’s policies on gambling and promotions involving casinos are sure to come under further scrutiny in the next few years as the Raiders prepare to make Las Vegas their home. For now, though, the players have found themselves on the wrong side of the league’s disciplinary department.

Trouble...... only because the NFL and owners didn't get a cut from the event...... all boils down to money, who gets it and who doesn't. Smart thing for the players to do is make the event charitable. That just might make the NFL think twice for laying down the law...

ESPN said some of the proceeds were going to charity. I am sure they can go there and gamble on there personal time right? Any which way this is stupid. Need to fix this rule before a team is there.
