Steelers take close look at Alabama’s Tim Williams with private workout

There is no doubt the Pittsburgh Steelers are in the market for a pass rusher, or two, in the upcoming 2017 NFL Draft. The question is just who will they be targeting with the 30th pick in the draft?

A lot of that depends on who is available, but you can certainly look at who the team has met with, and brought in for pre-draft visits, to give you a glimpse of who they are interested in.

One prospect the team recently showed an extended interest in, thanks to a private workout, is Alabama’s Tim Williams.

Williams is an explosive player, but has several red flags about him as a prospect, especially with a first round label on him.

Williams was strictly a pass rusher for the Crimson Tide this past season, only coming in on passing downs, and many suggest he struggled to learn and retain the defense. On top of that, Williams’ decision making off the field has been less than stellar. Several reports of drug use could certainly taint his draft stock just a few weeks from the big event.

Nonetheless, the Steelers are doing their homework on him, and it will be worth watching to see if he is one of the 30 prospects who is selected for a pre-draft visit with the Steelers. If he isn’t, there is a good chance the Steelers took a close look, and didn’t like what they saw.

Stay tuned to BTSC for the latest on NFL Draft news and prospects visiting the team’s headquarters leading up to the draft.

    Hard pass. Randy Gregory 2.0.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Randyitus aside, he can not cover at all. He is well known as a situational pass rush specialist in college....We can't afford a round 1 pick to be limited at the OLB position. We had that the last four years in Jarvis, except he was the total opposite.

Then you add in the Randyitus and he shouldn't be considered at all in the first.

Maybe they're thinking with all this attention someone will take him before we pick and that's what they want so they don't take a TJ Watt for instance....

Pass. There are other linebackers just as good, if not better...without the baggage.

Throw people off the scent of who we REALLY want? Or say he falls due to his negatives we might know at what point we might have an interest

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

The only logical explanation I can think of is the possibility he drops to a point where they think he's worth a shot.
                        3rd Round maybe?

Maybe we should trust the FO or is that only allowed when it's a pick we like?

lol...if they bring in a pot smoker as a first rounder then the FO must be smoking pot. Nothing against pot heads, but you don't select them to be on your football squad unless you want them suspended for a year.

Yeah...could just be due diligence. I can't see any way in the world that we use our first or even second round pick on a guy with multiple off-field red flags and who wasn't even a well-rounded enough player to even start on his college team. They could see him falling in the draft and therefore determining at what point it might be worth it to add a guy who might only ever be a situational pass rusher. When Martavis fell to round 4, they felt it was a worthy gamble at that point. They may be looking to see where the "worthy gamble" cutoff line would be for this talented moron.
