Success Rate for QBs After Round 1

Labriola has some really good data on QBs selected after the first round. In short, there are a few successes, but the odds are remarkably low, even when investing a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

I wonder what the stats/percentages are for each position.

I would think 1st round trumps all when it comes to success.

I saw the article this morning. Good stuff. Hopefully, with today's other news, we can put aside any talk of QB's in this years draft.

This is the same question that came to mind for me as well. I get that success at the QB position is strongly correlated to the round they were chosen, but I posit you'd find a similar phenomenon with any position you analyze. I think it'd also be interesting for the article to have included the success rate for QBs chosen in the first round as well (which I'd imagine aren't particularly encouraging when assessed independent of other rounds).

              Leaf vs. Dak.

Anyone know what round each of the top ten QBs now playing was chosen in?

Prescott, Carr, Dalton, Wilson, Bulger and Brees were all drafted after the first round...they have or had a successful career. I'm not including Brady..he cheated his way through. *****

brees IIRC was the 1st Pick in the 2nd round and carr not that far behind. brett favre was also drafted in that area

may not be 1st rounders but were in the top 30-40 players drafted. the drop offin success in the league after 40-50 is much higher then 1st round vs. second round

It is easy to cherry pick anomolies without context. Since 1998, there have been 128 picks in rounds 4-7. The result - 5 starting QBs.

In the same time period, in the 2nd - 3rd round, you have Brees, Wilson and Carr, followed by Andy Dalton and Kaepernick. Five players in nearly 20 years.

Picking a QB in the first is no guarantee of sucess, but it's incredibly hard to find a starting QB after the first.

If you stretch to include late first, you get Rogers (originally seen as a potential #1 overall) and Bridgewater. The rest - it's the Jason Campbell's of the world.

This makes sense to me. Seems like we should sell out to win while Big Ben is still playing and plan to suck for a few years afterward so we can draft another QB high.
