Free agency has started and all I got was this lousy column

It would make a great T-shirt or bumper sticker slogan for Steelers fans: “Free agency has started and all I got was a backup tight end.”

    Or a backup quarterback.

    Or a long snapper.

You’d think Steelers fans would be accustomed to the way the team does business by now. But no. Each year, as team after team spends millions on what is typically a misguided attempt to upgrade its roster and overcome poor drafting, Steelers fans gnash their teeth about every move.

And yet, all the Steelers have done in the free agency era, which began in 1993 – my first year covering the team - is have just four losing seasons in that time, make four trips to the Super Bowl and win twice.

That tells me they might be approaching things the right way.

So what is the Steelers’ way?

They identify the players on their own roster they’d like to retain and they make every effort to do so. Typically, they do so.

That doesn’t mean they always get it right. But more often than not, injuries have played a factor - Ike Taylor, LaMarr Woodley.

But you always know your own guys better than those from the outside. And they don’t have to learn a new system, scheme or vernacular.

The Steelers also are very cognizant of not upsetting the structure of their locker room. And by that, I mean pay structure.

For example, they’re not going to jump into the free agent market and pay a defensive player more than current defensive leader Cam Heyward. It upsets the apple cart in the locker room.

They’ll sign guys for the amount they have slotted and not a penny more. Typically, that means waiting for the market to settle a little before they dig in.

So complain about it all you like. But it’s been that way for 25 years and likely will be so for the next 25.

@ We should be reaching that market settling point early this week.

The Steelers had wanted to add a cornerback in free agency, but considering the going rate was around $10 million per year for average starters, that wasn’t going to happen.

After the opening flurry that has seen A.J. Buye, Logan Ryan, Stephon Gilmore, Prince Amukamara and Dre Kirkpatrick all sign deals for $10-plus million per year, the market should start to come down a little.

But who’s left at the position that’s any good or isn’t over the hill?

    Not much.

Morris Claiborne of Dallas is probably the best still available who, at 27, might have some long-term upside. But he was a player who the Cowboys were looking to dump just a couple of years ago before he finally started to play well. But he’s also been injury-prone. He hasn’t played in more than 11 games in each of the past four seasons.

    No thanks.

After Clairbone, you’re looking at a lot of guys in their 30s who will be better served retiring than signing another contract.

The Steelers have around $8 million in “mad money” that they can spend on free agents.

But they might want to spend some of that money elsewhere, such as on an experienced backup safety – Lardarius Webb or Jarius Byrd – or inside linebacker – Kevin Minter or Sean Spence – now that Lawrence Timmons has moved on.

@ Speaking of Timmons, Miami’s decision to guarantee him $11 million of his 2-year, $12-million deal pretty much meant he was out the door.

The Steelers still wanted Timmons back. And $6 million per season wouldn’t have been all that bad.

But guaranteeing that money to a linebacker who will be 31? That wasn’t in the cards.

Plus, the Steelers have Vince Williams waiting in the wings. Williams will bring a physical presence to Pittsburgh’s defense as a hitter.

Where the Steelers will miss Timmons is as a leader - though he was a quiet leader - and in terms of their depth.

Given Ryan Shazier’s injury history - he’s missed seven games the past two seasons since becoming a full-time starter - it would be nice to have an experienced backup there.

The team still has Steven Johnson, L.J. Fort and Tyler Matakevich behind Williams and Shazier, and they have some talent, but another experienced player there might not be a bad thing.

@ Markus Wheaton got a two-year, $11-million with $5 million guaranteed to sign with Chicago.

I like Wheaton and he’s a nice complimentary receiver. But $5.5 million per season?

The Steelers will reap the benefits of that contract and the one signed by Timmons next season in compensatory picks.

Connor Barwin, Lardarius Webb, and Jarius Byrd were all cut by their teams and therefore would not count against next year's comp pick formula.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I read somewhere that the Steelers will likely get no better than a 5th round comp pick for Timmons. Apparently, they factor age into the equation. Haven't heard what kind of comp pick we can expect for Wheaton. Anyone?

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors.

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

Damn, what's the story on Jairus Byrd? The guy, just a couple years ago, was one of the better FS in the league.

Here's another guy who wouldn't count against the comp pick formula now visiting our team, former GB and JAX CB Davon House:

(Connor Barwin is visiting Cincy, where he went to college...although they play a 4-3, and Barwin has been more effective in his career as a 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE).

Cornerback Davon House visiting the Steelers

Posted by Darin Gantt on March 13, 2017, 6:28 AM EDT

While many assumed former Jaguars cornerback Davon House was a sensible fit back in Green Bay and there was some early word of mutual interest in a return, we haven’t heard much from him since his release.

That could be changing in the coming days.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, House is going to Pittsburgh today to meet with the Steelers, adding that his market is “heating up.”

That suggests other visits if the Steelers don’t want him, or they can’t come to an agreement on his value.

House was a big-ticket free agent by for the Jaguars two years ago, but was benched and cut there. So he’s out stumping for work, and the Steelers seem to have a perpetual need for qualified bodies at his position.

Given the salary for Wheaton (2 years, up to $11 million), likely a 6th, maybe a 5th if we get lucky.

Steelers, Texans, Chargers together in free agent inactivity

                7:00 AM ET
                Jeremy Fowler
                ESPN Staff Writer

PITTSBURGH -- With most of the Top 150 free agents under contract and NFL rosters coming into focus, at least three teams must really, really like the way they draft.

Despite a ballooning salary cap, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans are the only three teams to sign one external free agent or less since the league year opened March 9. Houston's trading of Brock Osweiler was a deft salary dump and grabbed the rest of the league's attention, but as it stands the Texans haven't signed a single free agent coming from another team.

A modest free agency plan isn't uncommon for a team like Pittsburgh, which traditionally eschews the early-March sweepstakes and prefers to re-sign its own players. The Steelers' only signing outside its locker room is journeyman receiver Justin Hunter.

But the $167 million cap -- a $47 million increase since 2011 -- has enticed 27 of 32 teams to sign or trade for at least three new members. The Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals have signed two new players and re-signed many others, while the Chargers spent $25 million guaranteed on left tackle Russell Okung, their only signing.

Through 11 days, the per-team average is 4.4 new players signed. The San Francisco 49ers basically turned over nearly 30 percent of their team in less than two weeks, acquiring 14 new players this month.

Though inactivity in the new landscape is a bit surprising, the list of teams being inactive are not. The Chargers, Steelers and Texans have drafted well in recent years and are considered to have pretty deep rosters. That's why they are choosing to re-sign their own players, which the Steelers have done with Antonio Brown and James Harrison, among others. Houston, for example, can let cornerback A.J. Bouye walk because first-round pick Kevin Johnson is coming back from injury.

The Chargers were considered one of the most attractive head-coaching vacancies this offseason because the roster was talented and underachieving.

These teams probably aren't done adding, especially with an expansive bargain bin of serviceable veterans. But Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert hinted at a slow process back at the NFL scouting combine.

"We've always been a draft, develop, keep our own [team]," Colbert said. "I think you're seeing more teams doing it. And as a result, you're seeing less and less quality free agents. There's an inherent danger in that because some of the players who are hitting the market with the number of dollars that are available might not be quite worth what they're going to get paid because of the supply and demand...I think that it reinforces that you want to sign your own and keep your own. You have to be careful about the free-agent market and not overpay for maybe an average player."

i understand the steelers staying with their philosophy most years, because they are always up against the cap, but there is no excuse when they have this much money left over, are this close to competing for title, with bens window closing fast and still signs scrubs,

Let's give Colbert some leway until after the draft and a second wave of free agents becomes available. I don't want to get after Colbert until all options have been exhausted.

Even if you have cap space, overpaying for a FA isn't a good move...the salary structure can disrupt the locker room as well as creating cap havoc...

I would rather see that excess cap money go to keeping Tuitt, Shazier, Villenueva, and a possible longer term deal with Bell. We know all of those guys play well in this system. We have no idea if guys like Dre Kirkpatrick or Donta Hightower would have meshed on this team...why risk a long-term contract with an eight-figure cap hit on an unknown when we need to hold onto the young, building-block type players who are just now entering the prime years of their careers.
