James Harrison re-signs with Steelers (2 year deal)

    James Harrison re-signs with Steelers

Posted by Josh Alper on March 1, 2017, 2:06 PM EST

The agent for linebacker James Harrison said recently that his client wanted to sign a two-year deal this offseason and that he wanted to sign that deal so he could remain with the Steelers.

Harrison got what he wanted. In a post to Instagram on Wednesday afternoon, Harrison shared a shot of a contract signing that he captioned “Two more years Here We Go #steelersnation.”

Harrison played a game with the Steelers in 2002 and then returned to the team in 2004 to start a run in Pittsburgh that ran through the 2012 season. He spent one year with the Bengals before returning to the Steelers for the last three years. He’s picked up two Super Bowl rings, a defensive player of the year award and 81.5 sacks over that span.

Harrison had five of those sacks during the 2016 season and remained effective in the playoffs by recording sacks in each of the team’s postseason victories. The Steelers will hope for the same kind of impact as part of a defense that improved over the course of last season and has plenty of rising players to go with the well-seasoned Harrison.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

James Harrison re-signs with Steelers on two-year deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed linebacker James Harrison to a two-year contract.

The contract is worth $3.5 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

"He's excited to finish his career in Pittsburgh," agent Bill Parise told ESPN.

Harrison is playing his best football since 2011, a 38-year-old who injected life into the Steelers' defense late last season. He has lost some speed from previous years, but he's maintained his elite strength, which he uses along with veteran savvy to effectively rush the passer.

Harrison greatly outplayed his previous two-year, $2.75 million contract with 7.5 sacks in his last 11 games, including disruptive turns in the playoffs against the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs.

He has become part of the fabric of Steelers football. He and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin are very close, and Harrison's presence bought the Steelers time to develop young pass-rushers in recent years.

While Harrison considered retirement after the 2015 season, he came out sternly in January with the message, 'I'm not done.'

With 79.5 career sacks in Pittsburgh, Harrison owns the franchise record previously held by Jason Gildon.

$1.75 million/ year for all that JH contributes, both on the field and off? Grossly underpaid.

Ben and AB ought to each give him $1 million/year out of their salaries.

Why? Did James give Ben $1 million of his when Fitz ran by him and Ben saved his ass?

Nice to see Harrison re-signing. I hope that we don't need him to be the starter next year, or the year after.

Didn't Harrison's 100 yard INT return account for the same number of points in that game as Ben's arm did?

and if we are paying for screw up plays, does Ben owe the team money for the pick 6 against the Packers?

From a fan perspective, I'm really glad that James is coming back. I really enjoy watching him play the game.

From a football perspective, the Steelers retained the guy who is still their best pass rusher. Great move. Tomlin managed him very well this year - hopefully he does so again next year.
