Steelers sign son of Mel Blount among 6 new free agent additions

It appears the Pittsburgh Steelers re-signing of Anthony Chickillo was not the only contract news of the day on Tuesday, as the team also announced it had come to terms with six additions as futures signings for the upcoming season. Among the new names are two players with Hall of Fame connections, one of whom made his name with the Steel Curtain defense of the 70’s.

For Steeler fans, the most obvious name to note will be that of Akil Blount, son of former Pittsburgh Hall of Fame cornerback Mel Blount and a player we highlighted in the run up to the draft last year. After going undrafted in 2016, the young linebacker signed with the Miami Dolphins but was released before the season began and failed to catch on to a practice squad.

Also joining roster is offensive lineman Mike Matthews, son of Hall of Famer Bruce Mathews and another player with great bloodlines who went undrafted last season. Matthews spent time in camp with the Cleveland Browns before missing out in the final round of cuts and like Blount, was not able to find a place on a practice squad despite a few tryouts throughout the year.

Rounding out the group of futures signings are linebacker Jason Fanaika, offensive lineman Kyle Friend, cornerback Devonte Johnson and running back Trey Williams. Each of these players were also undrafted free agents, with all but Williams coming from the class of 2016. While they all found teams after the draft, only Friend and Fanaika stayed with a team beyond training camp, although neither made it past the practice squad. Williams has been in the league since 2015 and has already spent time with the Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts.

As futures signings, these new additions will have inked one-year contracts for the league minimum of $465,000. All will be long shots to make the roster, but the progress of a player like Alejandro Villaneuva from futures signing to starter shows anything is possible.

Too bad he's not a corner like Mel. We could really use one of those.

Clay Mathews being the exception to that rule.

Who remembers Anthony Dorsett?? Saw him play at Three Rivers back in 1996.

I wonder how Mel would fare under the current rules?

              Steelers re-sign Steven Johnson
Posted by Josh Alper on February 15, 2017, 4:14 PM EST

The Steelers signed a couple of impending exclusive rights free agents recently and they moved on to a player who was set to hit the open market on Wednesday.

The team announced that they have re-signed linebacker Steven Johnson to a one-year deal. Johnson was on track to be an unrestricted free agent next month.

Johnson signed with the Steelers last year, but only saw action in six games due to an ankle injury that forced him to injured reserve. He had six tackles and a forced fumble in those appearances.

Johnson played 16 games for the Titans in 2015 and spent the first three years of his career with the Broncos. The Steelers have 12 other unrestricted free agents-to-be, including running back Le’Veon Bell and linebacker Lawrence Timmons.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I'm mildly surprised that he came back. He seemed to fall behind both Matakevich and Fort. I'd think he'd go someplace with a clearer path to a roster spot.

                  Roster Recap: The changes continue

An updated look at the offseason roster moves.

It’s the time of year that if you blink, you might miss something, because the Steelers’ roster continues to undergo changes in the early part of the offseason, including a handful last week.

The Steelers re-signed Steven Johnson to a one-year deal, keeping him from becoming an unrestricted free agent on March 9.

Johnson has made it no secret that he wanted to return, especially after an ankle injury cut his first-year in black and gold short.

“I am excited to be with this organization,” said Johnson. “I don’t want to go anywhere. I am looking forward to next year because this team has a great opportunity to win a championship and I want to be a part of it.”

The Steelers also added six new players last week, including the sons of two members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Akil Blount, son of Steelers Hall of Famer Mel Blount, and Mike Matthews, son of Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews.

Here is a rundown of the six players signed last week:

Linebacker Akil Blount – Blount, the son of Steelers’ Hall of Famer Mel Blount, signed with the Miami Dolphins as a undrafted rookie free agent in 2016. Blount, who went to Florida A&M, was released late in training camp, and didn’t play last season.

Linebacker Jason Fanaika – Fanaika signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016. Fanaika, who played at Utah, was released during training camp and signed to the Oakland Raiders practice squad. The Raiders released him, and he was signed to the Washington Redskins practice squad.

Offensive lineman Kyle Friend – Friend, who played at Temple, was originally signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016 and spent time on their practice squad.

Cornerback Devonte Johnson – Johnson, who played at Weber State, signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016, but was released before the start of the season.

Offensive lineman Mike Matthews – Matthews, who is the son of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016. Matthews, who played at Texas A&M, was waived prior to the start of the regular season.

Running back Trey Williams – Williams came into the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Washington Redskins in 2015. Williams, who played at Texas A&M, also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts.

The Steelers added some depth on special teams as well, signing long snapper Kameron Canaday and punter A.J. Hughes. Canaday spent time with the Arizona Cardinals in 2016, while Hughes was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the New Orleans Saints in 2016, but didn’t make the final roster.

Other moves the Steelers have made this offseason include signing Greg Warren to a one-year contract before he became a free agent on March 9. The team also released cornerback Justin Gilbert, who they acquired via trade from the Cleveland Browns last year.

Here is a rundown of everyone who was signed after the season ended:

Linebacker Akil Blount – Blount, the son of Steelers’ Hall of Famer Mel Blount, signed with the Miami Dolphins as a undrafted rookie free agent in 2016 but didn’t play last season.

Linebacker Jason Fanaika – Fanaika signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016. He spent time on the Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins practice squads.

Offensive lineman Kyle Friend – Friend spent time on the New York Jets practice squad in 2016.

                    Steelers sign two; release two

The Steelers continue to make roster moves, signing undrafted rookie free agent quarterback Bart Houston, and bringing back receiver Canaan Severin.

Houston, a teammate of Steelers' No. 1 draft pick T.J. Watt at Wisconsin, finished his career with 1,540 passing yards and nine touchdowns. He played in 11 games his senior season, with five starts during his time with the Badgers.

Severin, who was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2016 NFL Draft, was waived/injured last August and spent the season on the injured reserve list. He was released by the team on May 2, following the NFL Draft.

To make room on the 90-man roster for both players, the team released linebacker Akil Blount and quarterback Nick Schuessler.

Signing Severin may indicate that there is something to the Martavis Bryant injured hip story. Stay tuned.
