The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

    The Good

    1. We're going to the Pro Bowl.

    2. Ben - Played well enough on the road to win this game. If Tom Brady retires before he's 50 and Ben ends up playing after Brady retires, he might have another SuperBowl in him. Seriously though, if Coates doesn't have the drop in the first series, Hamilton holds onto the ball in the end zone, we QB sneak from a foot out, we don't miss the extra point, and Brady's fumble is called a fumble, that's likely a 21 point swing and the Steelers win 35 - 33.

    The Bad

    1. We're going to the Pro Bowl

    2. Rushing 3 and dropping 8 into zone most of the game. And with 8 in coverage, forgetting to cover guys on top of it. Gut reaction - we should have fired Keith Butler at half time because it was clear this game was going to get out of hand. This game plan was a guarantee we weren't going to position ourselves to win. I could live with getting beat by being overly aggressive. But this game plan was disgusting. By the second Patriot's series, I gave up on this game and this team. At that point, I looked up the most points ever scored in a playoff game and secretly hoped the Pats would put up 74 points on us to set an all time playoff record. And that's just because I think that's what it would take to open up the Steelers' eyes and get some heads to roll. But nothing will change. It will all be the same. We accepted this fate of mediocrity when we didn't go outside the organization to replace Lebeau. Keith Butler and Mike Tomlin will never be able to beat Brady. If he's going to play until he's 50, we might as well not bother trying to compete.

    3. God. No matter how many times Antonio Brown called him, he didn't help us here. Maybe God is more interested in AB's FB Live posts from the Pro Bowl? Whatever it is, AB is clearly not a #1 WR for a big time playoff game. He was blanketed and ineffective. AB needs a true #1 playing opposite of him to make him more effective. If we had Bryant available and Green, the Pats wouldn't have been able to double AB and make him ineffective for most of the game. Whatever money the Steelers are thinking of paying AB, they should be spending it on a defender that can make a difference in the playoffs. Seriously, I'd rather let AB and Bell go if it would mean we could get the 2 best cover corners in the NFL. The path to a SuperBowl is Ben + Defense. At the end of the day, Ben's going to have a better chance with a better D. This offense can score 24.9 points per game with Bryant, Rogers, Ayers, DHB, Green, and Touissant at the skill positions. Would we really lose much production without Bell and Brown? I'm not sure it would make that much difference.

    The Ugly

    1. We're going to the Pro Bowl.

    2. I'm starting to realize the Bad points are all ugly. I totally get why everyone lowers their expectations. The odds of the Steelers winning another SuperBowl before Ben retires are now probably lower than the odds of Donald Trump going down in history as being our greatest president of all time. Heck, at this point, the Pirates have a better shot of winning the World Series before the Steelers win another SuperBowl.

    3. This team doesn't seem to care and it all starts with the owners. As long as we put butt in seats and sell merch and make money, everyone's happy. The Rooney's are happy with Tomlin. They lose money having to attend the SuperBowl. Where they lose out isn't getting home playoff games. Our goal as far as the Rooney's are concerned is get HFA throughout the playoffs. And lose the AFCC. Maximizes their revenue. As fans, we're suckers. We live for winning SuperBowls and get let down the majority of the time. And I can live with that. We always do. But at least tease me a little. Give me a little more hope. At this point all I know is I'm 100% certain we can't win another SuperBowl until Brady retires. And odds are, by then Landry Jones or someone like Bubby Brister will be our QB and we'll be right back in the 1980s and we'll accept that fate for another 10 years until we decide to make a switch at HC and try to get back to a SuperBowl. My best guess is we'll live with Tomlin and settle for mediocrity for another 15+ years. And we'll have some fun along the way. Maybe get our hopes up every now and then. Maybe even get to enjoy a fantastic player or two, a la Louis Lipps. But the toughest part to accept is that no one on this team cares about competing for SuperBowls. And there really isn't anything the players, fans, or coaches can do about it. Mediocrity is acceptable in Pittsburgh. Seriously, maybe we should give this team a participation parade. If I was a player, I'd either want to get traded or wouldn't give 100% and would just want to make as much as I can and avoid getting injured. There's no commitment to excellence or winning in Pittsburgh. It is what it is and we'll have to just enjoy it for what it is since we love the game.

    4. Flippy has lost his mind. At least until someone gives me something to believe in.

Turns out Bradshaw was correct. Tomlin (and his staff) are good. We saw the difference between good and great last night.

Good is good enough for the rooneys. And we will win a lot of games, make the dance and be relevant. But they are comfortable with good. I prefer trying to be great.

Some of you guys, don't know your azz from your appetite. When I read that The best WR in football wasn't a true number one, this article turned from interesting top comical.

And to say that a coach just took his team to the AFCC GAME is not good is even funnier.

I don't think Tomlin is a good coach. I can't remember the last time he came out with a killer game plan against a quality opponent, or made a meaningful half time adjustment. He looked clueless last night (again). I think their winning has been in spite of Tomlin.

Mommy always say, that you can't argue with a fool. So what do you call when a team miss their Pro Bowl players for a high number of games last year and still advance to division round of playoffs. Some of you like I said just started watching this team.

I think flippy makes some very good points. But yours on Antonio are also correct. Look, any team can take away a great WR. Brown was not the problem. The problem was we had no consistent # 2 or # 3 WR option yesterday. We owe it to ourself, and Brown to see what our Offensive production can be with Martavis Bryantm who is a great TD Catching WR with great physical skills. We also need another Vet tested WR as well cause I don't know if Coates, who is a very good physically skilled Athlete can take that next step up. Rogers and Ayers are fine as a 4th WR option. We also have to find a use for Jesse James more. He clearly has shown the growth this season that proves he can be a weapon on our team, and with his height & hands.

I understand what you're trying to say. But with Tomlin, the problem is not, nor has it ever been the " Whole "...it has been the " One ". As in that one single game. It does no good to have say a Lebron James on your team, use him like you know he can be used throughout most of the season, then, when it matters most...in the playoffs, completely go away from him. This is Tomlin's problem spot on. We go on through most of the season utilizing our best players the way they CAN and HAVE made a difference...like Harrison & Dupree coming after the QB around the edge, and then using our great speed with Shazier & Timmons, and yes even Sean Davis up the gut at the QB.

Then, all of a sudden when you face the leagues BEST All-time QB, a QB that ANYONE knows if you do NOT get him out of his Comfort zone ( The pocket )...or apply pressure on him right up the middle...has and WILL tear you apart. I mean seriously...how many times does one need to see it ? Well apparently Tomlin has memory issues cause it seems every time we face him, the one TRUE strategy that has worked in defeating him...Tomlin goes against that. Now explain that please ? Sorry but regardless of record, or AFC title game....that is NOT a good coach in any way, shape or form.

Now, if we would have done that, and done that all game, and we STILL would have lost...I would be totally okay with. But time and time and time and time and time and again.....Tomlin NEVER goes with what has worked during most of the season as it goes to All-out pressure on a QB once he faces the ONE QB ( Brady )..where it is an absolute necessity to do this, rather choosing the same approach to constantly rush 3 and maybe 4 D-players at him..thereby giving the greatest QB in NFL history all the time he would ever need back in the ONE area ( The pocket )..where he is most dangerous. Now I ask you sir....does that sound like a GREAT NFL Head Coach ? Or even a GOOD one ?

                    I thought so.

Lol, please don't make Flippy jokes even funnier, I guess we just played some chumps and Tomlin cane up with that game plan, sure her ok it but just like Batch said the other night if your DC is too dumb to add man to man press coverage in his playbook then you can't all of a sudden run it in the playoffs. This is on DC.

It all goes back to the defensive scheme, because Tom Brady* always shreds it and we never do anything to change it. When you let a lacrosse player set the franchise record on you, it isn't anything else but that.

Can you blame Brown for not making an impact? He was double covered all game by their top corner and a safety. The way that they took him away (although he did have 7 catches for 77 yards). That means that other players are being put into position to make plays. There were some huge - game changing - drops. I'm not talking about balls dislodged after a hit, or a drop in tight coverage with a hand in the face or smacking at the ball. I'm talking about DROPS. In tennis these would be called unforced errors.

In typical Belichick fashion, he took the best player away and made the others try to beat them. These guys were often put into position to make plays and too often did not. Coates with a couple of big drops, Hamilton in the EZ, Rogers with a fumble. Get a couple of these go our way and this is a different game.

Didn't help that Bell was gone for essentially the whole game too. I wonder how much of the game plan supposed to be was throwing to Bell?

True, but if so then it is up to the coaches to alter the gameplan mid-game. DW is a fine backup but you can't execute a LB gameplan through DW.
