We don't have the manpower for the 3-4 anymore. DL cant keep the backers clean and the backers can't make plays. Let Chickilo beef back up to play DE and Tuitt and Hargrave inside with Heyward on the other end. Shazier, Dupree and a 1st round pick at the LB'ers.
Time for the 4-3

Its not scheme, its talented players to run it, whatever numbers you call it
I honestly don't know why steeler fans don't get this
such a tired topic of discussion -
Long overdue. And colleges produce more natural 4-3 guys. We should have been doing this for years.
Think I'd rather see bud as STARTING DE then chickillo.

There is plenty of talent on the front line. Heyward and Tuitt can be Pro Bowlers. Shazier can dominate but not without guys up front to keep the blockers off him. You look at what Dallas did yesterday. Our scheme is tired. The rest of the nfl has seen it all from DL/KB

you are out of your mind.
Heyward and tuitt are not pro bowlers and to claim shazier can be dominant is frankly, not worthy of a replyComment

Scheme and trying to fool fool the qb only gets you so far.

Point is the scheme isn't the issue but the talent of that front 7 isn't there yet. Now Dupree returning could add to those other 3 as an above average player, Toss in a first and second round linebacker and 2017 looks promising. Add in Bryant's return and the sky is not falling but we are still a ways away from a talented D.Comment

I agree with the assessment that the scheme isn't the problem. When the Steelers changed the scheme back in the day from a 4-3 to a 3-4 they were the only team using the 3-4 scheme and certainly colleges weren't producing 3-4 defensive players, the Steelers were just better at drafting the athletes necessary to run the scheme and coaching them into above average, good or great players. The past 5 years of drafted defensive players just aren't up to snuff talentwise and no amount coaching is going to change that, IMO.
The offense is going to have to be off the charts every week for the Steelers to win enough games to make the playoffs and even when they are good enough to win games the Steelers may still lose, see the Dallas game for instance. If the offense under performs, forget it, the defense isn't winning a game for them this year.

when you choose a pass rushing NT because "you're always in the nickel"... without giving ANY consideration to how important 3rd and 1 is... it's dumb.
I would guess Ezekiel Elliot converted on 3rd and 2 (or less) at about an 80% clip, RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE.
if you're in the 34 and your pass rush sucks, get some better OLB's... don't take a lesser run stuffer at NT.
That's like taking a running QB because your RB's suck... no, just replace your RB2013 MNF Executive Champion!Comment

With the way things are going in this league, pretty soon it isn't going to matter. NFL teams will all be base nickel and then go into dime or even quarter on passing downs. At that point, 3-4 vs. 4-3 will then be the specialty defense for only short yardage and goal line sets.Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.
Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.
We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.
We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.Comment

Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware would both be successful either as OLB's in a 3-4 or DE's in a 4 man nickel/dime front.
And even in a nickel/dime world, I still see room for a Casey Hampton type (in his prime). May not collect sack numbers himself, but he could still collapse the pocket, preventing the opposing QB from being able to step up in the pocket to avoid the outside rush.Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

it always matters who you have in the middle. We had guys like Foote in the middle. Not a superstar but SOLID and disciplined. Outside LB's aren't stopping runs up the middle in short yardage.Steelers 27
