Tomlin defends conservative (absurd) game plan

There you have it in his own words. He was perfectly fine playing "not-to-lose" almost the entire game. As long as they sucked, it was OK for us to try nothing creative to get a spark. This is exactly opposite to what he's been on record as saying he doesn't want to be. The guy who lives in his fears. He's said in the past that he wants to be like the Pats*, who adjust to exploit the weaknesses of the other team. But here he was, slamming into stacked boxes, "to show some mental fortitude and show commitment to the planning and give guys an opportunity to work out of self-inflicted wounds.”

I don't want this kind of coaching. Losing can be accepted when you've put it all out there, gave it your all. This was one of the top most pathetic performances of the Tomlin era IMO.

Mike Tomlin defends conservative game-plan around Ben Roethlisberger
Posted by Darin Gantt on November 9, 2016, 7:22 AM EST

Mike Tomlin admitted he was being perhaps too conservative last week, saying the Steelers offense was largely a product of trying to run the ball to protect quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in his quick turnaround from knee surgery.

“Sure,” Tomlin said, via Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “The guy was playing in less than ideal circumstances, playing less than ideal number of snaps [in practice].

“It’s a matter of doing your due diligence and giving yourself a necessary chance to make the plays to win the game.”

Roethlisberger didn’t make any plays until the fourth quarter, as the Steelers offense never got on track. They wanted to run, rather than risking Roethlisberger in a no-huddle situation. It took that for anything to shake loose, and Tomlin said the rust never approached the level of concern where he might not play his starter.

“I’m sure that both potential scenarios were factors in some form of fashion,” he said. “Was it significant? I don’t know. It wasn’t significant enough to keep him out of the game.”

Until the Steelers can get a running game going or someone other than Antonio Brown to make a play, it will continue to be a problem, as Roethlisberger clearly wasn’t himself last week.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

It is very, very difficult to get a running game going when all you're doing is slamming into a stacked box against a team that's also tripling your best receiver and daring you to throw it anywhere else.

Dallas will do the exact same thing to us. We had better be prepared to do something different. No huddle early. Screens. Crossing patterns. Slants. You know... the stuff most every other team does.

I know AB is the best receiver on the team by a very large margin. But you can't tell me there wasn't a way for Coates, Rogers and Bell to find ways to get open in a passing attack against the Rats. We just went full-out conservative and predictable until it was too late.

The remarkable thing I took away from this is that even though he felt Ben was injured enough that he couldn't call passing plays, he apparently thought that option was better than putting Landry Jones on the field.

If that's the case, what is he doing on the roster?

We got our "6-PACK" - time to work on a CASE!

funny. i said that it looked like Haley's first year in an effort to protect Ben, and was told that it wasn't that way at all.. that, instead, apparently Ben audibled on every play....

Ben was NOT ALLOWED to change plays at the LOS the first year. That apparently was one of the concessions Haley made in 2013 before he got demoted.

This according to Charlie Batch, who played for Haley that same 2012 season.
perhaps you misunderstood... i was told he audibled the other day... not in 2012... you're proving something i didn't even say... i knew this already, but, thanks!

in any event, my point is, in both cases, they were uber conservative in an effort to keep Ben from getting hit.

anyway, here's ME quoting ME... heh

Instead, the whole time, I thought, "These plays look an awful like Haley's first year when his objective was to not get Ben hit. Why are they being SO conservative? that's not where he excels (pre-snap read, 3-step drop, hit a guy).... If he wasn't ready, don't play him. If he's ready, let Ben be Ben... "

                      Um, no.

And even if he did, the issue, is who is on the field. And that's all on Haley. Ben can't say who comes in the game when he's on the field.

When your THIRD STRING TIGHT END, is getting 84 snaps the last two games while the #2 and #3 TE's are healthy? That's a problem.
whoever said THAT was dead wrong... but, you're repeating (and agreeing with) what i said there in the other thread...

this is definitely crash!! i gave you a shout out in that thread! lol
