Shazier says Steelers run D looks like garbage

The Steelers knew that without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger yesterday, other parts of the roster were going to have to play better.

They decidedly did not, and Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier owned his part of it.

“We’re looking like garbage right now,” Shazier said, via Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “[Opposing offenses] can do whatever they want to do right now.”

While harsh in tone, it may also not be inaccurate, as the Patriots hit them for enough big plays to turn an otherwise decent day into a loss.

Of the 362 yards allowed (below their average), the Patriots gained 117 of them on four plays, two of them deep balls to tight end Rob Gronkowski. Those chunk plays were the difference.

Shazier said the early plan on Gronkowski was good, but the Steelers may have fiddled too much with their defense.

“We were giving them calls that Tom didn’t like, and I guess when we changed up a little bit and [Brady] got to seeing things he liked, they took advantage of it,” Shazier said.

“When you think about it, they weren’t having a lot of success,” linebacker Arthur Moats said. “And then you throw those two [Gronkowski] plays in the second half, you look at the scoreboard, and that ends up being the difference.

“It’s definitely frustrating. But we’re not looking for comfort. We understand that we dropped the ball with that, execution-wise, a couple plays where we really just didn’t execute the way we needed to, and that’s the difference in the game. It’s frustrating because we know how good we can be, but at the end of the day, when you’re making those mistakes and we‘re not executing the way we need to, you gotta deal with the result.”

And the result was rubbish, according to Shazier.

Twice, Shazier hit the wrong gap on run D. One of those times Blount took it for about 30-40 yds. He didn't mention that....

Shazier is right, but his mistakes were a big part of the problem.

I dunno. Watching some other games this weekend I have to say the Steelers LBing corp is mostly average and far from the best of the best. Look at AZ and SEA with speed AND tackling ability. The Steelers are now #27th in the NFL in opponent rush yds/att and that falls mostly on the LBs.
I can't recall a season in the last 25 where they have been so poor against the run. It certainly is the anti-LeBeau defense of the past.

No they weren't (I'm not even sure they where mistakes), the problem was the outside contain, it was the same runs gashing us even when Williams was in the game. It was due to the D lineman trying to get a quick pass rush and not reacting to the run. The patriots lineman where just letting our end rushers lose contain and then Blount would cut it outside. Not to Mention the run people keep referencing, Shazier took on a blocker and freed up Tuitt who whiffed on the tackle in the backfield, Harrison on the outside completely lost contain he was clearly looking to rush the passer and didn't play the run at all.

I'll go to the DVR and rewatch ... I was sure that early in the second half, Shazier whiffed on a tackle to give up one big run, and was out of position to give up another. Don't think you can pin it all on the D-line and Harrison (although they didn't play well, either).

He may have missed a tackle during the game and there may have been a play where he wasn't in the right hole, but it wasn't that play and it is not what was wrong with our run D Sunday or against the Dolphins. The reason we are getting gashed is because our lineman and linebackers are trying so hard to generate a pass rush we are constantly losing contain against the run.

Look where Harrison is on the play, it occurs about the 8:10 mark in the 3rd qtr.

Finally got a chance to go back and re-watch. *'s second offensive series of the 2nd half, first play, Shazier missed a tackle on Blount, giving up an 11 yard gain. Then, next play, Shazier shot inside instead of covering his gap, resulting in a huge gain for Blount running left (about 25 yards). I understand that there's plenty of blame to go around, but I'll say it again, Shazier's mistakes were a big part of the reason why the D "looked like garbage" in that game.

I still say that the problem is we needed another "big snack" in the middle... it all starts there in the 34. MUST COMMAND A DOUBLE-TEAM. Trying to generate a little extra pass rush at the expense of stopping the run is dumb.

Said it then, say it again. It's like taking a CB who is superior assisting in the run for a step down in coverage.

And no, Hargrave's not bad. Just wanted "better" at commanding double-teams and STILL beating them from time to time. Time will tell how he stacks up to say Andrew Billings or other NT's taken after him...

Much like Moseley and Shaz will be forever compared... Shaz's behind, for those without black and gold glasses...

Maybe it's the NT that's missing but after watching a lot of non-Steeler football this weekend, I have to say the Steelers LB corps is average to mediocre. I'll give you Shazier but after that it's mostly down hill. I mean, cmon man, the Steelers are relying on a 38 yr old LB to get to the QB 2 or 3 times a game. I like V Will but he won't make me forget Jack Lambert anytime soon. And Arthur Moats... guy plays his all but his all ain't that much.
