    CJ Goodwin

Was with the Steelers for a couple of recent camps trying out at WR. Falcons coaches moved him to CB, and he's done well, made the team at that position.

My question is, why didn't the Steelers' coaches see that potential, and try him at CB? Not trying to be too critical, but they were really in need of CB help while they had Goodwin in the fold ...

    Because they didn't, I guess.
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

To borrow a phrase from the HC: "Obviously."

Makes you wonder if they even considered it....

They did see the potential in Roosevelt Nix and changed him from a D lineman to a fullback, with success and also transitioned Chickillo from a D lineman to a Ol after a weight loss. So I don't think it is so obvious that the coaches cannot recognize an opportunity to change position for a player. C J. Goodwin made the team, which is something of a success story but we'll see if he can play well enough to stick around.

Villenueva was a wide receiver and tight end at West Point and then a defensive lineman with the Eagles. Now he's a starting NFL left tackle under Mike Munchak.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Yes, they saw the potential in Nix and Chickillo...and Villeneuva...and changed their positions. But they didn't do so with Goodwin, when they needed a CB so badly.

Just have to wonder if they really do have some deficiencies when it comes to evaluating DBs.

Is Goodwin already a probowler? The guy has zero statistics in a real NFL game. Let him make a few tackles or a maybe a interception before we decide the guy is the answer to any teams problems at CB. If he turns out to be great, you have a point. If all he becomes is a OK backup, then they probably already have players better than he is.

Even an "OK backup" would've been a plus for this team at the time Goodwin was with them.

Look, maybe he becomes nothing ... the fact that he's already made an NFL roster at the position tells me he would have at least been worth a look.

It's not like the falcons recognized it because their coaching staff has such an eye for talent. He was playing some CB for them last season on the practice squad because they wanted a big body to play Julio Jones in certain situations. Goodwin at 6'4'' 220 was asked to play corner for these drills and that's how they found him. Now he is not going to be a starting cb, the best he could hope for is to play during goal line situations to defend the fade. When the Steelers had him, we did not need that kind of guy, we needed guys who could cover in space.

"Secondary coach Marquand Manuel was the one who suggested Goodwin make the switch from wide receiver to cornerback during Week 16 of last season."

So what if he saw that he had potential to play CB in practice drills before he suggested the switch?

I guess that means they missed the boat on Blake too, since he made the Titans roster, right?

It's just luck, your initial question was how our coaching staff didn't recognize he could play corner. Well if we never used him at corner we wouldn't of known, the falcons just happen to pick a big fast guy for the drills and they stumbled on to it. It's not like they went to Goodwin and said we think you will make a good CB.

Uhhhh...that's exactly what happened (see above article that I cited). The secondary coach told Goodwin he thought he should switch to CB...otherwise the change wouldn't have occurred.

Only after he was used in drills did coach ask him to make the switch. Even the article you posted said the secondary coach suggested it in week 16 of last season. The point is that he wasn't discovered by any sort of coaching genius or advanced scouting, it was just dumb luck. Also it's yet to be seen whether or not they actually found a viable corner, time will tell.
