CB Cortez Allen appeared in 56 career regular-season games.


The Steelers have released cornerback Cortez Allen, the team announced today.


Allen entered the NFL as a fourth-round (128th overall) draft selection of the Steelers in 2011. He appeared in 56 career regular-season games (18 starts) and totaled 150 tackles (25 solo), 34 passes defensed and six interceptions.

It doesn't appear to be a post-June 1 designation, so we only save $1.7M rather than $4.4M on this year's cap, but this way, he will count nothing against our cap next year (when we'll likely be trying to extend Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell to long term deals).

The Steelers released veteran cornerback Cortez Allen on Friday.

Allen was due to make $4.4 million in 2016 and was signed through 2018 after the Steelers signed him to a five-year deal worth almost $25 million in 2014.


A knee injury limited Allen, 27, to one game last season, and the team asked him to take a pay cut last month. The team saves $1.7 million in salary cap room this year by releasing him.


The Steelers drafted Allen in the fourth round in 2011. He started 18 of the 56 games he played and had six interceptions. If he’s healthy, he’ll draw interest on the open market.


The Steelers have focused plenty of pre-draft attention on defensive back prospects.

Steelers have sucked at evaluating and developing DBs for nearly a decade now. Let's hope this is the start of a turnaround in that department.

Cortez Allen had a lot of promise. He was durable and capable.
All the hindsight is laughable.

Allen was usually in very good position however he couldn't adjust to the ball in the air. His problems were mental, not physical.
