Browns Cut DBs

Along with cutting CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, the Stains released S Donte Whitner today.

Ekpre-Olomu, as far as I know, never played a down for Cleveland, and may not be over the effects of an injury suffered in December of 2014 (although he insists he's ready to play). A 7th-round selection last spring, he would probably cost next to nothing to sign.

Whitner, 31-years old, had some stellar seasons with the 49ers. He may have fallen off a bit with the Browns -- but who wouldn't with that bunch? He might demand more $$$$ than the Steelers can afford to pay, so maybe that ends the discussion immediately.

What do you think? Should the Steelers take a look at either/both of these two?

Nothing to lose signing Ekpre-OLOmu and testing him out as part of the off season program, but like Smith the LB from Notre Dame I suspect the knee has long term issues.

IEO has to pass through waivers, and I imagine that Chip Kelly, who recruited him to Oregon, would be interested.

Can't imagine what it might cost to bring a guy like Whitner on board. Furthermore, do we have the ability to create enough cap space to make such a move?

As for IEO, he had 1st-2nd round skills prior to the injury, IIRC. I have no issues bringing him in either.

Certainly would have inside track, also being close to home (presuming he's from Oregon). Sad for the kid... I think I read that he is covered with an insurance policy that will net him a good chunk of change (for a regular working Joe like us), but it pales to a 6-8 year career in the league, if he would've made it that long (reasonable possibility).

It isn't the the Browns have a glut of talent in the secondary. If they cut IEO, it's likely that his knee is shot. Very unfortunate for him, but I read somewhere that he had a $3 million insurance policy.

As for Whitner, I'd certainly take a look. I bet the Steelers don't add anybody in the secondary until after the draft, but if they don't find a safety they like, I'd give Whitner a look. For what it's worth, PFF ranked him just behind Robert Golden (who was ranked a handful of slots behind Eric Weddle). If Whitner still has the speed and athleticism that he did early in his career, he could be a nice add. If not, then I'm not sure how much he helps.

The medical on IEO has to be real bad.
Whitner will be 31 this year and he didn't look like what he once was last year. Lost a step or two. For a db that is a major issue.
I pass on both.

The way I see it..if you can't cut it with the Stains...you probably won't cut it else where. However...Whitner intrigues me, but the Steelers don't have the money to do sign him and would rather see them draft a safety in the first or second.

I don't see them signing Whitner. I'd like to see them give Ifo a physical and work him out. If his knee isn't shot, he might be able to fill a role on this team.

He also seems to pick off Ben every game we play him...even back to his Jacksonville days. He can't intercept Ben from our sidelines.

I would take a good look at Ifo because it is the Browns that released him....Whitner is a possibility depending on the money.
