    Early Mock

OK, I'm coming up with this mock with the idea that the Steelers trade back to late 1st/early 2nd to get an extra third-round pick. Also that they ship Suishi for a 6th rounder. Don't know if either of those scenarios is likely, but it's kind of a fun way to dream...

    1) CB Kendall Fuller, VaTech -- Steelers get help they really need on the outside in the d-backfield
    2) WR/RS Braxton Miller, tOSU -- dynamic player that gives O another weapon and immediately improves return game
    3) OLB Noah Spence, E. Kentucky -- falls because of character concerns, but Colbert does his homework and is convinced he's worth rolling the dice on with pick acquired in trade (wouldn't want to see them take this guy if they're not convinced he has gotten past his "issues")
    3) FS DeAndre Houston-Carson, William & Mary -- Steelers grab a FS, enabling them to move Mitchell to SS
    4) DE Azia ****tu, Stanford -- rotational player to spell Tuitt and Heyward; gives Planet Steelers posters fits because board won't let them type in his last name
    6) QB Cody Kessler, USC -- to compete with Landry Jones for backup position
    7) OT Alex Lewis, Nebraska
    7) TE Kyle Carter, Penn St.

FREE AGENCY--Sign DT Damon Harrison (thanks Slapstick). Looks like Mike Adams won't be a FA because of an obscure injury clause; Steelers bring him back along with: Beachum, Foster, Gay, Golden, McLendon, S. Spence, Warren, and Todman.

There shouldn't be any real character concerns with Noah Spence. He made young man mistakes and grew from them. By all accounts he's a solid young man with tremendous talent. I like the pick but I don't think he falls to the third.

Also, don't think Braxton Miller is refined enough to get a second round selection. Amazing talent but has much to learn as a WR. I would consider him in the 3rd. So flip flop spence and Miller and you might have a solid mock.

        OK, consider it flip-flopped!

I don't think Braxton last until the 3rd

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

A Fuller and Spence one two combo would be okay by me. However it never goes the way we think it should.

Interesting read. Makes sense spence would be a top 15 pick. He is one of the best pass rushers on the country. I suppose it depends with Miller. He's all potential at this point. I believe he is a slot at the next level. He is unreal quick, body control is off the charts but needs time to develop into a well rounded receiver. I personally wouldn't spend a second rounder on him. He disappeared for serious stretches of games and was a non factor in most. In the second, I think he's a reach. Not because he doesn't have that kind of talent but because he hasn't proven he can be consistently productive.

If we draft Spence #2 would that mean we could officially quit making excuses for Jarvis Jones and acknowledge he is a bust?

I'd love that combo, but from what I'm reading after the Senior Bowl, most seem to think that Spence will be a first round pick. As Marcus Peters showed last year, if the talent is there, teams will take a talented guy in the first if they are convinced that the character concerns are a thing of the past.

If the Steelers are going to improve their pass rush in the first, I think it is more likely to be with a DT or a DE than with an OLB, based on where the strength in this draft class seems to be.
