Dumb question - assuming the FAs believe it is reasonable that we are going to make a real SB run next year ...

Do FAs generally take less money for a real chance at a ring, or do they all pretty much get the cash while they can?

If I were running the Steelers, I'd try to re-sign Boykin (don't think he will be interested), Gay, Golden, Foster, Beachum, and McLendon, as long as they'd agree to reasonable deals. Blake, Allen, Adams, Thomas and Hey-Bey could hit the bricks. I'd also dump Cortez Allen, Michael Vick, and Shaun Suisham. It's been mentioned that Tomlin might like to sign Eric Weddle from San Diego, and I think he'd really help out this D, but I suspect he'll command more $$$ than the Steelers want to pay.

It looks like the Steelers have 41 players under contract and about $10 million in cap space...

Timmons has a $15 million cap hit ($9+ million is salary) and DeCastro has an $8 million cap hit (all salary in the form of his 5th year option...both of those guys could be extended and another $10 million or so saved easily...

I also think that they get to rollover about $4 million or so in this season's unused cap space...

Some depends on the draft. At this point I think Blake, WAllen, CThomas can easily be let go. We should have Golsen which maybe makes Boykin expendable, although I Iike him. I think I'd keep DHB for ST. I am wondering if Mike Adams could play guard and/or backup the inside spots. Hopefully Pouncey comes back full strength so Wallace can go back to backing up the inside spots.

Now that I think about it, I don't think Adams is a FA because he never came off the PUP. I could be wrong...

I would try to resign Gay...if he didn't take it, I would go to Boykin...

That timing would work out great, the LBs are just starting to come into their own, he'll have finished bringing them along in another year.

I think the mention of Weddle is spot on, and this rumor has floated elsewhere on other football sites. Weddle is getting somewhat long in the tooth and won't command a big (or long) contract, and he's probably looking for a true contender. Re-sign Golden, have Weddle be the starting SS, and draft the future SS early (probably Round 2 or 3, based on the current thinking on safeties in the draft) to learn under Weddle for a couple years. Goodbye W.Allen (thanks for always giving a great effort, though!), S. Thomas, C. Allen, A. Blake, and hello early round CB, Gay, Cockrell (more potential than all the rest), Golson, and later round CB fights it out with D. Grant. Boykin will likely leave because of the way he was dog-housed for so long.
