    Ben's Injuries

We all know how much Ben likes to talk about his injuries. So much so that some even think he's a bit of a drama queen. But there has to be something to it. There has to be a method to the madness.

It's a little odd. Most players, coaches, teams, etc. don't talk about injuries. They aren't open about it. Even on our own team, Ben's the odd ball that discloses more than everyone else. And I wonder what the rationale is.

And sometimes, he's elusive. For example, right after the game, he wouldn't say anything. But then he opens up as the week progresses. That says there's some gamesmanship at play here. And I suspect Tomlin must be on board because he really doesn't cut off Ben.

Maybe it's just simply to put some doubt in Denver's game plan. Maybe it's simply to make them prepare for 2 different QBs. But even moreso, does the extent of Ben's injury put more pressure on Denver? They of course expect Ben to play, but the odds go up with Ben hurt making Denver a bigger favorite. Does this extra pressure come into play? Does it matter?

Does making the Steelers seem like a bigger underdog help them be better this week? Less pressure on the Steelers for sure. We seem to do better in an underdog role when everyone else counts us out. Ben seems to perform his best when it's not expected. To the point of seeming heroic.

Is this just a mental trick to help Ben? The team? I dunno. What do yinz think? There has to be something more to it, right?

I hope so because with no ben,AB we could be in trouble. I have no faith in Jones going against Denvers defense.

well damn near every sports analyst has said Ben's a drama queen and they have no idea how injured he truly is because he is a tough SOB.

I won't say no faith, but it's definitely on the low side. what's interesting this year is that jones has had plenty of opportunities. this is not like riding the bench for 17 weeks and then coming in cold. the reps he got in preseason, coming in to several games and previously starting - I know he's not a seasoned pro, but he needs to and should be able to deliver a solid performance. If he can't, if it's interceptions and fumbles and 200 yards of offense - then we need better backups. i get that his running game will not be top tier - but it should be good enough.

Jones should be able to win the game at this point. let's hope he does if necessary.

          Flip,

I wouldn't try to read too much into all this. I don't think it's purposeful subterfuge, or else we'd see the Steelers playing it that way with a lot more of their injured players. I think it becomes evident, as you look at the pattern over the years, this is just another case of Ben being Ben.

If it makes it more difficult for our opponent to prepare, well, then that's just a little bonus.

I would not agree that "damn near every sports analyst has said Ben's a drama queen". Especially this week. I've seen several on TV or in print says things like "toughest QB in football" and even "toughest player in the NFL". Maybe they just fell for his acting ability?

              I should have used quotes...

I agree Dizz. You nailed it.
He IS tough. But he makes sure We KNOW without a doubt he is hurting.

Flip I have my own theory on "why" he does it.

He wants us to lower our expectations when he does that. It lessens the pressure on him.

While that might sound bad, how often does a player get criticized THEN we find out he was injured the whole time?

Ben is making sure that if he plays hurt, we understand if he struggles.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

I think it is also a self-motivational tactic..

Like Hines writing his name on tape on his helmet in camp each year.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Don't matter to me why Ben does it. His words don't matter. He comes out crippled and plays strong, that's the only thing that matters.

I think it takes pressure off the other players during the week but also gives them motivation to leave it all on the field once the game starts

If Jones has to play, we are screwed IMO.

I think we are anyway, too many other key players out, esp. Brown.

Listening to Jaws on Mike & Mike this AM and he said he had the exact same injury as Roethlisberger. He is IT IS PAINFUL. HE COULDN'T LIFT HIS ARM. Said it comes down to Ben's pain threshold as to whether and how well he can deal with it.
