While I 100% do not question the use of Williams against the Raiders, when possible, I think the Steelers need to spell him a bit moving forward. If you can give Todman something in the area of 5-7 touches per game, I think that could help keep Williams fresh.
Consider this with Williams: • His 27 carries against the Raiders were the second most in his 130-game career. Only 13 times he's had more than 20 carries in a game. • He was on the field for 80 snaps against the Raiders and has 199 for the season. Last year, he had 135 in an injury-shortened season. • He is on pace for 249 carries with 181 projected over the final eight games. That would be the second most carries he's ever had and most since he was 25. • He has gone over 200 carries in his career only three times before. • He has 1,522 pro carries and 969 in four years in college at Memphis. “I am not (concerned),” Tomlin said.
Tomlin never has been concerned with overworking his featured back ever since he took over the Steelers in 2007. Tomlin said in 2007 he was going to run Willie Parker until the wheels feel off. Not long after that, Parker suffered a broken leg and his career was over 20 months later at 29. Rashard Mendenhall carried the ball 794 times in a three-year span, tore up his knee and retired at 26. Bell played in 97 percent of the Steelers' snaps over the final 1 1⁄2 months last season before getting hurt.
