Pittsburgh Steelers place Cortez Allen on Injured Reserve

In a move that should surprise nobody, the Steelers have promoted QB/WR Tyler Murphy from the practice squad. To make room on the 53, they have placed CB Cortez Allen, who has been battling a knee injury for what seems like the entire 2015 season, on injured reserve.

Murphy spent the week quarterbacking the scout team in practice, with Michael Vick unable to play due to a hamstring injury sustained in the Arizona Cardinals game last Sunday, and Ben Roethlisberger one more week away from action, the team can't go into this game against the Kansas City Chiefs with only Landry Jones at the QB position.

Murphy is 6-foot 1-inch, 214 lbs and played QB in at Boston College, but was added to the Steelers during the offseason to play wide receiver. In 2015 he has one catch for 16 yards in week one, but was cut and placed on the practice squad to make room for Le'Veon Bell returning from his 2 game suspension.

The news of Murphy being added to the roster will mean Ben Roethlisberger will likely be inactive for the game Sunday, leaving Murphy to be the emergency quarterback with Landry Jones as the starter. It will be Landry Jones' time to shine Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, let's hope the team doesn't have to turn to Murphy to win a football game on the road.

Cortez Allen pointing to several 'coach Tomlin questions'

By Neal Coolong October 23, 2015 7:03 am ET

      http://steelerswire.usatoday.com/2015/10/23/steelers-cornerbacks-cortez-allen-injury-heath-status/

NFL teams are required to list participation reports after three practices leading into each week’s game. Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen has been listed as a full participant far less often than he’s been listed as having been limited, according to Tribune Review reporter Chris Adamski.

Officially, he’s listed as having a knee injury, the same one he got during the Steelers’ Week 1 loss to the Patriots.

It’s peculiar that he’s bounced between participating fully and being limited so often over such a long stretch of time. As Adamski pointed out, this is the same Cortez Allen who was benched and placed on injured reserve last year. At least with that he had a tangible injury — a broken thumb that required surgery.

Similar sentiment comes out regarding Brandon Boykin and what’s amounting to be one of the least beneficial trades in recent memory. The Steelers appear set in their cornerback rotation of Will Gay, Antwon Blake and Ross Cockrell. But considering contracts and traded draft picks, the most expensive Steelers cornerbacks appear to need divine intervention to see the field.

Allen himself doesn’t appear to understand why he’s not playing, either.

Asked if he’s getting closer to being cleared to play, Allen responded, “That’s a Coach Tomlin question.”

Asked if it’s just taken a while to get over his knee injury, he said, after a five-second pause, “Ummmm, the situation is what it is. And… (4-second pause)… that’s just probably a question better answered by Coach Tomlin.”

      Are you frustrated?

“I try to keep a level, positive head at all times. Yes, I have my feelings about, um, you know, not being able to do but I have to stay mentally in it so I can help as best I can any way and in any way.”

On the surface, it might seem, to an objective observer, Allen’s absence is based more on him being the fifth of five cornerbacks and he isn’t earning a helmet. To mask that, the team is leaning on a past injury to explain why their big money cornerback isn’t getting on the field.

Most who watch the team closely would agree, Allen’s the fifth of the five, and wouldn’t disagree that the team is picking the right four cornerbacks, if only four are to be active on Sundays.

The whole situation seems odd, though, and either way, it seems like just another step toward the end of Allen’s time in Pittsburgh.

Nov. 3 is the trade deadline. Just saying

Boykin the least beneficial trade? He was given up for a song...he as a pass defense and some special teams plays...if you got that out of a fifth round pick, you'd be happy...

Scobee is the least beneficial trade...4 FG misses and an XP miss...and $2.5 mil against the cap...Boykin looks like a genius move compared to that...
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

The Steelers simply don't value the position and tried to get a bargain rate for a #1. They ended up paying a bum very good money.

You're on the mark again. I don't get the perception some have that we gave up this high pick for Boykin to come in and save the secondary.

I was totally wrong about Scobee. I thought that was a good pick up and didn't anticipate the waste it became. I guess Jacksonville saw something but after losing two kickers we were desperate for stabiility.

Funny how Mike Mitchell is earning his roster bonus this season while Cortez is not...besides, Allen hardly signed a cap crippling deal a la LaMarr Woodley...

Yet the Steelers had Cortez penciled in as #1 or #2 at the beginning of the season. How could they have been that far off? I'm beginning to think it might be a good thing this team doesn't draft corners with high picks--maybe they just don't know how to evaluate players at that position.
