If he does really well, I think it's more likely he'll be playing for a different team next season.Comment

Steelers' cornerback Boykin wondering when he'll take the field

Cornerback Brandon Boykin believes he will play more on defense for the Steelers Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers at Heinz Field than he did Thursday night at New England.
Of course, if he plays one snap on defense, that would count as more.
“It’s the first time I can remember I never played” on defense, said Boykin, the Philadelphia Eagles’ No. 3 cornerback for his first three NFL seasons. “I’m sure they had a reason for that. I don’t know what it was. I’ll just take it in stride and go throughout the week and see what happens.”
The Steelers acquired Boykin from Philadelphia Aug. 1 for a 2016 fifth-round pick to bolster their secondary, and he reportedly was happy to leave the Eagles. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Boykin was displeased with his role as the third cornerback and was not a starter, saying it was “getting real old.”
He played not at all on defense in his first game with the Steelers, despite their secondary being a weak spot. Antwon Blake and William Gay started at cornerback, and previously-demoted Cortez Allen entered when they used three. Boykin’s play was limited to special teams against New England. He said neither Mike Tomlin nor any assistant coach gave him an explanation.
“Anytime you play anywhere, you want to play more, or you want to play, just get on the field in general,” Boykin said after practice Monday. “That wasn’t the case last week. I don’t know why, I don’t know what the deal is or what the reason was for that. I can’t answer that. You guys have to ask coach Tomlin and the rest of the coaches about that.”
He said if it continues, he may have that conversation himself.
“I don’t really know what’s going on. I think it will kind of play out, it’s just Week 1.
“But I definitely intend on playing at some point and I think that will be a conversation I will have if it continues to go this route, but right now I don’t know what’s going on.”
Boykin intercepted six passes in his role as the Eagles’ slot cornerback in 2013, one year after they drafted him in the fourth round from Georgia. Those are more interceptions than any Steelers player has had since Troy Polamalu swiped seven in 2010. The Steelers managed only 11 as a team last season. Pro Football Focus rated Boykin 19th among all NFL cornerbacks last season.
He says he knows the defense, so that is not the issue.
“I know what to do, I feel comfortable. I know that if I get out there I’ll contribute and make plays. We had a month of training camp; I’ve been practicing along with everybody else. Of course you have to continue to be learning on the fly, but as far as when we’re playing certain coverages, it’s just football, you beat your man. I know that I can contribute and play, so we’ll see what happens in the future.”
The Steelers secondary and defense as a whole did not perform well against the Patriots. Tom Brady completed 25 of 32 passes — including a New England-record 19 consecutive completions at one point — for 288 yards and four touchdowns. The Steelers had no interceptions.
Boykin said his situation is not necessarily a frustrating one because it’s only one game, but he did say it was tough to watch Brady do his thing and not be able to help.
“You’re a competitor, you want to be on the field,” Boykin said. “Seeing us go out there and not get the job done, it was a little bit frustrating.
“But you have to stay positive throughout the whole process. It’s a long season. As I said, at some point I feel I’ll help contribute, but I don’t make those decisions. I’ll continue to be out there and work hard.”
Asked about the Steelers’ problems with communication on defense against the Patriots, Boykin attributed it to New England’s no-huddle offense “and us kind of not being ready and they took advantage of that more than once.”
He said the Steelers worked on correcting that in practice Monday.
“When they’re in the no-huddle and getting to the line faster than you’re getting lined up, it’s kind of a panic situation,” Boykin said. “When you get caught in that type of situation, you’re not ready, you’re not set, so it’s a little bit of an advantage for them. We can’t let that happen.
“We have to communicate faster, the whole defense. We have to get the call and get lined up faster. Communicate faster, basically — us getting the call from the defensive coordinator or whoever’s making the calls, and then us lining up as fast as we can and anticipating teams are going to do that to us in the future.”
Boykin would like to be part of that process against the 49ers Sunday.
“I anticipate it, as I get more reps and get more comfortable with the D. We’ll see what happens.
“It’s Week 1. Guys are freaking out,” he said of the media. “That’s normal, that’s natural, that’s how the world works. But, for me, I can’t really have that mindset. I’ll be fine. I’ll continue to do what got me here and play the way I’ve always played and I’ll be fine.”

I saw a segment on NFL live or one of those shows...I forget...and they brought up Boykin and pointed out how he didn't play and alluded to the Steelers having buyer's remorse and not getting what they thought they'd be getting. I'm surprised nobody has been talking about it.Comment

Stating the obvious is not a real answer...
maybe he could have givin an example as to WHY others were played when clearly those who did play looked extremely confused.... Shoot, maybe Boykin woulda looked worse than the ones out there..
look, I like tomlin. Admittedly, however, I find myself being frustrated with his patented "O-O" look on his face after a negative swing of momentum happens. It all really comes down to winning though... If the steelers are winning, I could care less what he looks like or says. Hope we get on track against SF... Don't know if I can handle this board if we go 0-2 haha.sigpicComment
