Steelers claim TE Ray Hamilton off waivers, release TE Rob Blanchflower

By Jeff Hartman on Aug 6, 2015, 5:41p

The Pittsburgh Steelers claimed TE Ray Hamilton off the waivers from the Dallas Cowboys, and to make room released TE Rob Blanchflower.

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to juggle their 90-man roster, and the most recent transaction was claiming TE Ray Hamilton off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys, and to make room for the new tight end, they released another TE in Rob Blanchflower.

Blanchflower was drafted in the 7th round of the 2014 NFL Draft, and spent his rookie season on the team's practice squad after an injury plagued preseason. Blanchflower has been healthy throughout most of camp, yet recent injuries along with the fact he hasn't made any significant plays which would warrant the team keeping him around if another viable option became available lead to his release.

The release of Blanchflower is a vote of confidence for 5th round draft pick Jesse James, whose name has repeatedly been mentioned when the team does any type of red-zone work throughout training camp.

Hamilton was an undrafted rookie free agent signing out of Iowa, and the 6-feet 4-inch 252-pound tight end will now get to throw his hat in the ring in an attempt to be a part of the Steelers' tight end depth chart.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I've been reading a lot of buzz on Cameron Clear, too. He's likely to be a ps candidate but he may have a shot at making the 53.

Clear is not quick at all. He would offer little in the passing game. Think of him more like a jumbo full back. He has size and has gotten better at camp but if he is part of the 53 well we are not all that. Could he be on the practice squad yes he has a shot at that but he is far from a lock to make even that.

If we stay with the 3-4 I could very well see Dupree and "Chick" as the starting OLBs in 3 years. It's up to them to show it starting tomorrow night.

                    Steelers make roster moves

Team signs veteran kicker Garrett Hartley to the active roster.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. ─ The Steelers signed veteran kicker Garrett Hartley, the team announced today.

Hartley is entering his seventh NFL season. He spent time with the Cleveland Browns (2014) and the New Orleans Saints (2008-13). Hartley originally signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted rookie free agent on April 28, 2008, out of the University of Oklahoma.

In 59 career regular-season games, Hartley has made 85-of-104 field goal attempts and 178-of-179 point after attempts. He has seen action in four postseason games, making all eight field goal attempts and all 15 point after attempts. Hartley will wear No. 8.

To make room for Hartley on the roster, the Steelers placed quarterback/wide receiver Devin Gardner on the Waived/Injured List.

Doesn't putting Suisham on IR make room for Hartley? Why did they have to waive Gardner too?

Is Suisham actually on the IR yet? I may have missed the announcement if he is. Not like Garnder needed to hang around for them to determine he wasn't going to make it.

I believe you can place a player on IR during preseason. And Suisham is having surgery for a torn ACL and cartlidge damage. Dude is done for sure, 100%.

Would guess Gardner was released b/c injury wasn't allowing him to participate and get reps. You don't make the club in the tub. This designation allows an injury settlement and maybe he can try again later this year or next with a new team.

doubt it. He saw so much playing time and got passes thrown his way because he's obviously earned it. Just days before the game we were hearing how he was another late round steal and he heir apparent to Heath. No poor showing in his first NFL action is going to sway them. Some guys are worth the effort of development because of their tools. He's one of them. That game was probably the best thing that could have ever happened for this kid

PSU skill players nearly always seem to underwhelm in the NFL (save for Allen Robinson currently and a couple others over the years), so, we'll see how it plays out for him. The Steelers would welcome him becoming starting quality TE in the NFL with Heath nearing the end.
