    8/3 Camp report

Lets just get right into it. Out today were Ben,Shamarko, Wheaton McCullers, Spaeth,Harrison,Foster and D Williams
Heyward ran sprints but didn't do drills. Pouncey back in there today and Wallace kicked inside to guard.
Rogers took some punt return work with Boykin and DA but looked like he turned an ankle and left rather early on the cart.

Tunch and Mike Mayock at practice today. Was lucky enough to meet Mayock and he posed for a photo with my sons. Very pleasant guy. Got to talk with him but for only a minute.
Coates hit the field early and was taking extra reps off the jugs.
Boykin smooth on punt returns. No drops and he just looked like a natural back there.

TE coached by Tomlin who encouraged today's group minus Spaeth to lift through the sled drill.
    Order for TE's 83 81 87 85 for what it's worth.
O linemen warming up with 20lb medicine ball. Trying to improve their punch and rising blow explosion.

DHB missed more then a few in early warm ups. He has had a good camp but today not so much.
Receivers working on post corner routes today diving into back corner of the end zone. Difficult throw but AB and Rogers excelled at this one drill.

    Goal line live:
3 to 84 on slant tipped away by W Allen. Almost tipped it to himself for the pick.
3 inc to 84 on an out bad toss and C Allen did have AB covered well.
3 inc to 83 high toss DA open on a fan.
All 3 goal line plays were 1 back or empty sets.
16 complete to J James for TD
16 inc as Dupree blows in and slant can't be completed.
16 rolls right away from heavy pressure from Chick and Conrath. Smartly throws it away.
16 inc to Blanchflower on a slant as Holliman bats it away.

    1 on 1's:
    Wallace 2x handles C Thomas.
    AV holds out Geathers
Kruger n Dieffenbach battle to a draw.
    Thorton beats Dismukes.
    Finney anchors against Conrath.
    Van Dyk handles Niko Davis.
Palmer gives ground but holds out Geathers.
Whimpey and Walton battle to a draw.
    Rahrig holds out Hemer.
Tuitt excellent bull rush on Gilbert. A draw.
    Walton bests Finney.
Walton solid gets under Van Dyk.

    Wr n db drill:

AB complete over C Allen. CA has been in good coverage but against AB well you know.
Lewis makes diving pick in back corner of end zone covering Phillips.
Goodwin complete on deep in cut in front of diving Blake who just misses it.
DHB beats Blake on quick slant.

    11 on 11 live;
3 hands off to Stingily stuffed by Tuitt.
3 A gap run by Stingily for about 6 with Green on tackle.
3 to Stingily again and Moats in quickly for no gain.
3 play action pass to Heath for about 50 yds before being dragged down from behind. Crowd loud calling HEATH!
16 hands to DA for no gain. DA really needs to be used on the edges more. More wr then rb imho.
16 Chisholm hits 8 hole for 15 yds. Van Dyk a solid block.
16 hand off to Stingily blasted by Garvin ...fumble.. recovered by Garvin.
2 misses Phillips on a drag Chick with big pressure.
2 hand off not sure of the back stuffed by Zumwalt.
2 hand off to Chisholm who hits hole hard and pushes out 4 yards. Way to finish a run.
2 hand off to Chisolm who tries to cut back but Boykin stayed home on back side for the tackle.

    Next 11 on 11:
3 comp to DA on a fan for 5 yds.
3 inc to 84 on a 9 with C Allen in coverage. Pass off target.
3 comp to 84 on comeback good for 15.
16 comp to Johnson on a quick hook for 5.
16 complete to 14 coverage by Blake.
16 inc on out as Webb dives and tips pass away.
3 inc to 83 popped by Garvin" A" gap blitz by Zumwalt applied good pressure.
3 comp to 84 on deep in. Cover 2 in secondary and AB found the soft area.
3 comp to DHB who runs an out with 40 a step behind.
2 at qb high snap and Tuitt with the sack.
2 at qb blitz by 94 and another sack.
3 20 yds on seam to Goodwin for TD. Fire blitz picked up well by 1st team O line.
3 comp to Heath on a drag for 10 yds.
3 hands to Chisholm Moats blows it up for no gain.
3 TD to 84 and 28 draped all over him. CA frustrated but coverage was good just not good enough.
16 comp to Goodwin Chick with excellent speed rush just missed getting there.

Weather warning with some rain falling:

    11 on 11:
    3 comp to 26 on a drag.
3 inc on out to 84 with Blake in coverage.
3 picked by Golden in end zone. Golden has covered well all day.
3 over throws AB ball sails high.
3 comp to Goodwin on an in cut for TD in front of 22.
16 comp to DA for 10. DA hands have been steady.
16 to Coates back of the end zone TD excellent diving grab. Hands not good yet but better then advertised.
2 comp to DA on a hook.
2 comp to J James on quick out for short TD. JJ has shown some good red zone potential.
3 passes quick screen to 26 for 10. Punches thrown in camp fight #2 between Green n Hubbard. Quickly over but it's taking practice to a high intensity level.
3 comp to DA on drag for 5 Spence on the tackle.
16 runs sweep left with Chisholm for good gain. AV blocking Green and opens up huge hole. AV best he has looked at left tackle.

Notes: Coates along with Blanch and JJ as up men and blockers on KO returns. DA appears to be the #1 returner.
AV stood out today in both run n pass blocking. Long arms are very difficult for blockers to get off. According to Wolfley he is 340 now. He
    impressed today.

Summary: Team led by AB with excellent work habits seems to be rubbing off on a bunch of guys who are staying late and that's great to see.
I have to get back to my job so I won't be at camp again. For those of you who like camp reports my good bud "Alex" is full of great
detailed info and he is far more thorough then I am.
Hope you enjoyed the updates as I enjoyed getting them to you.

My boy James. Perfect prospect to learn from and eventually take over for Heath. I don't think we'll miss a beat in that transition. Already 2nd string? That was fast

Spaeth had day off so JJ is still 3rd team but he has looked good for a rook.

I don't think that Spaeth has legit starter in him. Heath is a weapon. Spaeth is not bad.

I think James was a great pick. I think he will just get better since he such a young guy.

I thought that last year's woes began with Allen being there in coverage often, but unable to make the play on the ball. Did these seem like balls that he could have made a play on but didn't, or more of great throw in only a spot where the receiver has a shot, and AB makes a great catch? I am really hoping to see Allen make the leap back this year and can't bear more of the same.

And btw thank you for the reports. This is a great read for those of us who are nowhere near.

At camp it's often the 1's vs the 1's in practice and 2 vs 2 but as far as Allen on AB he's close but it's AB who is as good as it gets at wr. He sinks his hips well and has shown a burst at camp but I'll hold judgement until he shows well in pre-season games against other teams 1's. I would say this we better hope he is the starting left corner because Blake has been working with the 2's and Blake will help us more in the slot then outside the #'s.

IMHO, Antonio Brown is quite possibly the best assignment that Allen could have in camp. How could you not improve when you are working against the arguably best WR in the NFL?

I remember reading a story from Cowher's early years with the Steelers about how they were afraid Joel Steed was a waste of a 2nd round pick just because Dermontti Dawson whupped him regularly in practice...if Allen can be comparably solid in his position as Steed was at NT, the defense will improve dramatically...
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

                  Another interesting factoid:

Though he was given a day off, Roethlisberger was calling the offense for at least some of the 11-on-11 drills...

Man, I hope so. CA and Tuitt are the two players who IMO can give us the greatest upgrades over the position last year. Left corner, FS, and RDE (Cam Thomas) were probably our three weakest defensive positions last season. I fully expect Tuitt to be a big upgrade over Thomas. I expect MM 2015 to be better than MM 2014. The one that is up in the air is Allen. If he corrects his ways, and improves to an above average corner (which is his expected floor when signed to the extension) then the improvement is enormous at the position over last year. Not asking for Revis Island, but Ike light would be tremendous for now.

Is it too old to say "No, that sounds like leadership, and we all know that Ben is not a leader." We haven't heard that kind of talk for awhile.

I was thinking how it showed the rift between Ben and Todd Haley...

I was thinking that we should bench Ben in favor of Byron Leftwich.
