Unlike other coach-executive relationships, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and G.M. Kevin Colbert have figured out how to stay on the same page. The last pages of their contracts once again have the same expiration date.

The Steelers have announced that Colbert’s deal has been extended through 2018, only a few days after Tomlin received the same kind of security. Colbert previously had been signed through 2016, like Tomlin.

“I am happy to announce that we have extended Kevin Colbert’s contract for two additional years,” Steelers President Art Rooney II said in a team-issued release. “Kevin’s work and footprint on our football operations have been a key factor in our success. We are excited Kevin will continue to lead our personnel department for at least the next three years.”

“I am truly grateful to Art and Mr. Rooney for the opportunity to continue my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Colbert said. “It is with great anticipation that we enter into the 2015 season in pursuit of another Super Bowl championship.”

Colbert starts his fifth year as the team’s G.M. Before that, he spent 11 years as the director of football operations. During Colbert’s 15 seasons with the team, the Steelers have generated 11 winning seasons, three Super Bowl appearances, and two NFL titles.

The terms of Colbert’s deal are, and probably will remain, unknown, but given that the Steelers have now paid Tomlin and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger near the top of the market, things definitely have changed in Pittsburgh since Bill Cowher resigned due in part (as Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review confirmed on Friday’s PFT Live) to his belief the Steelers would never pay him market value.

I struggle with this observation. Cowher, while good, didn't get to the dance until late in his career. Some might even say he was a product of his assistants.

Never had a worry about Colbert leaving. Glad he's extended though!

It also doesn't make sense because if it was money Cowher was after, he'd have moved on to another org. that paid him more. He's been solidly retired, and is not chasing coaching bucks.

His wife was unwell. He was heavily distracted his last season.

During his tenure, the Steelers won more games than any other team in the NFL.
