Steelers sign H.C. Mike Tomlin to a 2 year contract extension through the 2018 season

Steelers sign Mike Tomlin to contract extension

    Posted 45 minutes ago

The two-year contract extension will keep Tomlin with the team through at least the 2018 season.

The Steelers have announced a two-year contract extension for Head Coach Mike Tomlin that will keep him with the team through at least the 2018 season. Financial terms of the contract extension were not disclosed.

“I am pleased to announce we have extended Mike Tomlin’s contract through the 2018 season,” said Steelers’ President Art Rooney II. “Mike has proven he is one of the top head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident he will continue to lead the team in our pursuit of another Super Bowl championship.”

Tomlin, 43, is entering his ninth season as Steelers head coach in 2015. He became the youngest head coach in NFL history to both coach in and win a Super Bowl when he led the Steelers to a 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. By winning the Super Bowl in only his second season as a head coach, he also became the fastest to win a Super Bowl title in Steelers’ history.

“I very much appreciate this contract extension, but my sole focus has been and will continue to be meeting the challenges that lie ahead for the 2015 season,” Tomlin said. “These past nine years in Pittsburgh have been a wonderful experience for my family, and I look forward to pursuing what is the Steelers’ goal every year – bringing another Super Bowl championship to the City of Pittsburgh.”

In Tomlin’s eight years as head coach, he has guided the team to an 82-46 (.641) regular-season record, the best start in franchise history by a Steelers head coach. He has led Pittsburgh to four AFC North titles, five playoff appearances and two Super Bowl berths (XLIII and XLV). Tomlin has won at least five home games in each of his first eight seasons, and his 47 regular-season home victories during that span are the fourth-most in the NFL. Steelers’ players have earned 45 selections to the Pro Bowl since Tomlin became head coach in 2007.

Additionally, Tomlin has served on the NFL’s Competition Committee since March, 2013.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Don't you just know how some hate reading this. I love it. One of the best coaches in the NFL during his duration.

I remember that label from the old Steelers boards. Was that HHH or Crash or someone else?

TOMLIN frustrated me early on but I believe he's grown much over the years.

Mike Tomlin has been head coach of the Steelers for 8 seasons.

Omar Epps was on the T.V. show House for 8 seasons.

Tomlin has now officially outlasted his doppleganger.

Please name me one thing he does well. Just one. Leader? No. Motivator? No. Time management? No. Evaluator/developer of talent? No. I get that the Steelers won some games under him. But anyone could have taken over a team with Ben and two coordinators in place and beaten the weakest SB team in history (Cardinals). Then to go on and get outclassed/outcoached against GB, and the absolute blah this team has been since. I don't get it. Is it the occasional press conference quote that sounds good but ends up being an empty promise/threat? Personally, I believe it's the media. The same media that touts Doc Rivers as a great coach because he won with 3 Hall of Famers and Rondo (and has done squat without them) did so with Tomlin. I've asked so many times over the years for his fanboys to please list the things he brings to the table. It's never met with actual answers. Just that he won games even though my aunt could have done the same with the roster he inherited. I'm sure this post will be met with more of the same. Despite still having Ben I consider this his team now. Most of the players were acquired during his reign. The results thus far have been typical of a fraud. No playoff wins. Guess they feel that warrants an extension. I'm just glad Colbert seems to have taken back full responsibility for the draft (I think he let Tomlin have too much say for a few of those bad years starting 5 years ago) so at least the talent is almost to the level again that even Oviedo could coach them to a winning season. We won't ever win another SB with him as coach now that the team Cowher and Colbert put together is gone. He's just not a good coach. Should still be fun to watch as long as Ben is here though. Go Steelers!

Reportedly at least $7 million a year.

                    Staying Power

The Steelers' tally of 3 head coaches since 1969 is tied for the fewest in the NFL over that span, while the Browns (another one of the NFL's oldest franchises) have had 17, tied for most in the NFL.

                    Franchises Since 1969:

Head Coaches: Steelers 3, Browns 17
Starting QB: Steelers 22, Browns 40
                    Super Bowl W-L: Steelers 6-2, Browns 0-0

He is clearly impressed his employers as a Leader, Motivator, Time Manager and Evaluator/Developer of talent. Who else matters, unless you think the Rooneys and everyone in the front office is clueless.

Everyone's got an opinion but sometimes I wonder how people come up with opinions like the one above without inside information? Time management n evaluating talent you have to be on the inside to truly know.
Here is what I know. I go to camp and report back to you what I see day in day out at Latrobe. Tomlin is a teacher. His technique details are on display daily. He is excellent with the how n why. Listening to him teach blocking techniques to the TE's at camp and then praising those that blasted the sled followed by him blasting those that didn't is a teaching clinic all by itself. He makes guys better at football period.
Is he Lombardi or Noll? No. His W L record is .641 which imho is excellent. I'm glad we got him and I believe we're in for another good year this year because of him. I'll be at Latrobe the first day pads go on.

I like Tomlin and am glad he is our coach, but I always get amused when I see steeler fans touting non losing seasons as some kind of benchmark

Its been 5 years since we have won a playoff game with a franchise QB at the helm. That needs to change this year, IMO. Arrow is pointing up with this team and its time to make some serious noise

and I don't know how anyone with a straight face can say Tomlin impresses with his clock management skills. Pretty weak part of his game , IMO

HHH. The guy reveled in being racist and prominently had pictures of the prez of the US in all kinds of stereotypically racist depictions. Its bad karma to invoke the joker's name on this forum.
