Dupree: ‘I am ready to keep working’

          Posted 7 hours ago

          Teresa Varley Steelers.com

First round pick Bud Dupree was happy to finally take the field at rookie minicamp.

On Saturday, Bud Dupree walked with the rest of his graduating class at the University of Kentucky with a Steelers decal proudly displayed on the cap all graduates wear.

On Sunday morning, that same logo adorned the Steelers helmet the team’s first round draft pick wore in the final practice of rookie minicamp.

Dupree missed the first two days of minicamp, four practices in total, so that he could attend graduation. It was something that wasn’t just important to him, but to his mother Sophia Stephens. Dupree had promised his mother he would graduate, so being there to receive the diploma he earned for his degree in community and leadership development meant the world to him.

“Graduation was great,” said Dupree. “I am happy to have gone through it, to be finished with school. It was four years of hard work and I finally got it done. It was a great experience, something you never get to do again unless you go back to graduate school. Having my diploma is something I can use whenever I need to. You can now tell your kids someday to go finish school. It felt great.

“It’s something I wanted to do. My mom wanted to see me graduate so I made her happy. She was very proud. I am the first one to graduate in my immediate family so it was a great experience.”

Dupree said he could feel the love and support from those attending Kentucky’s graduation ceremony, hearing the loud cheers when his name was called.

“It was a touching feeling and I am glad I got to experience it,” said Dupree. “It comes with a lot of pride. A lot of people don’t get to graduate and I’m very happy I am one of the few that got to.”

While his fellow graduates likely took some time after graduation to celebrate their accomplishment, Dupree had a job to get to. He hopped on a flight Saturday night bound for Pittsburgh, and was at practice on Sunday morning.

“I knew it was time to get to work,” said Dupree. “I was tired when I got in. I was tired, but you have to get over it.

“It was a whirlwind, but I got it done. I am happy to have it over with and now working hard on my football career.”

Despite taking the field after just one meeting, Dupree seemed comfortable in his first practice but he is the first to admit he has a long way to go.

“Practice was good,” said Dupree. “It was tough going right out there after missing a few, but like everything, you just have to push it under the rug and keep on moving. I think I did all right. I have a lot to improve on, but it was a good start.”

Dupree worked closely with outside linebackers coach Joey Porter, and is anxious to learn more and be a part of the defensive scheme the team runs.

“Coach Porter is a great coach to be around,” said Dupree. “He is awesome. It was great working with him. He taught me a lot already. The way they use the outside linebackers is great. They get a chance to make plays and I am excited about that. I still have a lot to work on and I plan on doing that.

“It’s great to be here. I am ready to keep working.”

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

If Peezy is Hulk, which Steelers would make up the rest of the Avengers?

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Jarvis Jones on rookie Bud Dupree: 'He's real intelligent'

                            By Jacob Klinger
                            on May 27, 2015

PITTSBURGH -- From what Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Jarvis Jones can tell, Bud Dupree is a quick study.

Dupree, who the Steelers drafted 22nd overall in the 2015 NFL Draft, has impressed his fellow first-round draft pick and outside linebacker in position meetings as he learns Pittsburgh's defense.

"He learns fast man," Jones said. "Just in the meeting room you can tell he's picking things up. I mean, it's Day 2, but he's picking things up so it's going well so far right now. I can speak only on what we have done."

Jones is starting at right outside linebacker ahead of James Harrison, the veteran said on Tuesday. Dupree plays second-string left outside linebacker opposite Harrison, Harrison said.

Arthur Moats finished last season as the primary backup to the since-retired Jason Worilds at left outside linebacker.

Jones credited former Steeler and outside linebackers coach Joey Porter with emphasizing the mental aspect of the game and ensuring his position group communicates well.

Dupree recorded 247 tackles and 23.5 sacks in four years at Kentucky. He was projected as a top-15 pick in this year's draft before falling to the Steelers at No. 22.

Jones also said he didn't take the team's selection of Dupree personally.

"Hey, look, Bud's going to be a great player and we're going to be great players together," Jones said. "We're both working hard, both pushing each other and we're having fun. And he plays on the left side anyway, so."

Dupree: 'I am going to make an impact'

Bud Dupree is confident he can have an impact on the defense.

It’s the day Steelers rookies have waited for since they were drafted a few months ago. Their first training camp practice. Their first chance to show a little more of what they are made of to their coaches and teammates, and for the first time to Steelers fans.

First-round pick Bud Dupree, the linebacker from Kentucky, was among those anxious to get started.

“Today will be a good day,” said Dupree. “I am just eager to see how everything goes. I am ready to go out there and compete and get better as a team. We always want to get better each and every day, we take it one step at a time.

“I have been looking forward to it since I got drafted. I am ready to play.”

Dupree, who has been relying on fellow linebackers James Harrison and Jarvis Jones to learn the ropes, said the offseason program that included OTAs and minicamp helped prepare him for today.

“It helped me a lot,” said Dupree. “Just going with what the older guys say, this is way more physical. I am ready for it. I just have to make sure I am in the playbook a lot and playing full speed every play. I feel comfortable with defense.”

He also feels comfortable with himself, and his ability to make an impact on the defense early and show why he was a No. 1 pick.

“I am going to make an impact,” said Dupree. “Whatever I need to do to help my team win, I will do. Whatever coach puts me at I am okay, but you always work to start. I think I can make a big impact, along with other guys. Not just me. I see everyone has gotten better. Jarvis has stepped it up. I just want to keep getting better every day.”

And today, is the first step.

Now before I get boo'd off stage I hope people really think about this for a second. We have JJ (who I like btw), Shazier and now Dupree. Of those three who is known for their physicality? Hmm...ummm...none of them. We have two athletes and a football player but none of the three are known for being able to lock and shed. I know the NFL is changing and you need LBrs who can run but man do I miss the days of Lloyd, Harrison at his peak, Porter, Greene etc. I miss tough guys on that Steeler D. We have one guy I would consider a tough guy and that's Heyward. I hope our speedy athletic D proves you don't need to be mean to be great.
                                Trolls are people too.
