NFL withdraws tax-free status, will start filing in 2015

Because it's the right thing to do. Ha! Nothing to do with Congressional Inquiries, I'm sure. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/29/sports/football/nfls-league-office-to-drop-its-tax-exempt-status.html?ref=sports&_r=0

And this:
As a result, the league will no longer have to publicly disclose its tax returns, which include the salaries of its top executives, including Commissioner Roger Goodell ... Goodell received $44.2 million in the 2012 fiscal year. Goodell was paid $35 million in 2013.

Other sports, especially baseball, are probably having a fit at the precedent this sets
"My team, may they always be right, but right or wrong...MY TEAM!"

I'd imagine that this has something to do with it:

As a result, the league will no longer have to publicly disclose its tax returns, which include the salaries of its top executives, including Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Ultimately, I don't think this means much of anything. MLB gave up its tax exempt status long ago. The leagues are not actually profit centers; it is the teams that profit. They have been and will continue to be taxed.
