2015 NFL free agency: Eagles have interest in Jason Worilds

By Dan Sager on Mar 4, 2015

After seemingly gutting their roster over the last 24 hours, the Eagles will target OLB Jason Worilds in free agency.

The Philadelphia Eagles will enter the 2015 season without their franchise's all-time leading rusher and a player who has accrued the second most sacks in Eagles history, as Lesean McCoy was traded to Buffalo and Trent Cole was released outright.

What the Eagles do have, however, is a great trio of linebackers and almost $50 million in cap space. Kiki Alonso will join standout MLB Mychal Kendricks and sack artist Connor Barwin, and the Eagles are reportedly set to make Jason Worilds an offer in free agency, according to Elliot Shor-Parks of NewJersey.com.

In fact, the addition of Worilds would give the Eagles on of the better linebacking units in the league. Worilds is set to command anywhere from $6-8 million on the open market, a price the Eagles now have the capital to afford. It's unclear how much competition the Eagles will face for Worilds, but he would seem to be the final piece in building up their defensive scheme.

On the other hand, if Worilds generates a significant amount of interest from Philadelphia, it's unlikely Brandon Graham will return to the team, contrary to an earlier report which suggested contract talks with the free agent outside linebacker were ongoing.

The Steelers, a team with a glaring lack of depth at outside linebacker and some newly-generated cap space, could be among the teams in the market for Graham if his price is right. Worilds signing with the Eagles and Graham signing with Pittsburgh would be an interesting development, a move reminiscent of the Duce Staley signing in 2004.

Either way, it seems as if both teams are willing to move on from their former outside linebackers while the Eagles already seem intent on making Worilds a member of their team.

Think they might be leaking this as a negotiating tactic with Graham?

Let another team pay him that kind of money.

In the likely event that Worilds leaves, I hope that he gets a huge deal. The more he gets the better the Steelers can do under the comp pick formula.

The article pretty much states that this is what Worilds should ask for - and is coming from the perspective of an agent. Of course he should ask for $53M. Any GM who forks it over should be fired on the spot, but don't blame a guy for asking.
