10-5. The score of the game and our record afterward.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Steelers Notebook: Chiefs defense stellar in red zone

                    December 18, 2014
By Ray Fittipaldo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers have scored 30 points in a game seven times this season. It’s only the third time in franchise history they have accomplished that.

The team that stands between the Steelers and a playoff berth Sunday has not allowed 30 points in a game this season. When the Kansas City Chiefs visit Heinz Field they will be counting on their highly rated defense to keep the NFL’s top-rated offense in check.

The Steelers lead the NFL in total offense (424.9 yards per game) and are sixth in the league in scoring (27.8 points per game). The Chiefs are No. 1 in red-zone defense, No. 4 in scoring defense (18.1 ppg) and No. 8 in total defense (331.8 ypg).

“You have a couple of No. 1s going against each other, so that’s a good thing,” Kansas City coach Andy Reid said.

A skeptic might say the Steelers have accumulated their gaudy statistics against the league’s defensive doormats, and they would have a point. Nine of their first 14 opponents rank in the bottom half of the league in total defense, and six are in the bottom 10, including four of the league’s five worst defenses in Jacksonville (28th), Tennessee (29th), New Orleans (31st) and Atlanta (32nd).

The only team the Steelers have played this season in the top 10 in total defense is the New York Jets. The Steelers moved the ball against them, but did not score a touchdown until 1:16 remained.

“It’s a good defense,” quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said of the Chiefs. “We’re going to have to look at a lot more film because they get after the passer, have a good secondary. This will be one of our toughest tests this year.”

Kansas City has held nine of its 14 opponents to 20 points or fewer. The Chiefs have the best red-zone defense in the league with opponents scoring touchdowns on just 37 percent of their trips inside the Kansas City 20. If the Chiefs maintain that, they would be the best red-zone defense in the NFL since 2008, when the Baltimore Ravens held opponents to 34.7 percent.

“Normally, in the red zone your strengths and weaknesses get exploited one way or another,” Reid said. “Our guys, they’ve really done well in all phases of the red zone. It’s a good challenge for them this week. The Steelers are playing very well. Todd [Haley] has done a nice job with that crew. Ben is playing great football. Runners are running well, and the big O-line is playing well.”

Early in the season, the Steelers struggled in the red zone, but they have risen to 14th in the league with touchdowns on 55 percent of their trips inside the 20.

For the Steelers, the key could be pitting their strong rushing attack against a Chiefs front seven that would rather rush the quarterback than stop the run. The Chiefs are sixth with 38 sacks but 28th in rush defense.

When asked why the Chiefs are so good in the red zone, offensive lineman Ramon Foster offered some insight into how the Steelers would like to attack when they get in scoring position.

“I think it’s what teams don’t do against them for the most part,” Foster said. “Teams get down there and feel like they have to throw in the red zone. If you continue to do what got you down there, then you have a chance to be successful. Our job is to not let them dictate that or distract us from what we want to do.

“We want to be balanced run and pass. When you’re in the red zone, the defense has a lot in their favor. They have the back of the end zone, the sidelines. They can clamp down on a lot of stuff. If you’re passing, their rushers can tee off. Their rushers can play for anyone in this league. Our job is to stay on schedule, not get in third-and-8s and pass the ball. That’s what they want us to do.”

Chiefs 23 Steelers 18 Same game plan by the Chiefs as the Jets. Steelers can only score by field goals. I do have a bad feeling about this game. Will need some defense and not sure the Steelers have enough.
