    Good Article on Shamarko Thomas

I don't know if he will become a star with the Steelers, but he's already a success when it comes to life.

He's barely out of college, has five siblings, and only a year ago had no way of knowing if he'd ever make enough money to keep his famliy together.

Why does he have three kids of his own? Are these guys so dumb? Don't these people know of contraception? If he hadn't made it to the NFL, he'd be fending for 10 people on a degree in child and family studies!

I've often wondered about that too. Apparently logic and common sense are not the strength of a lot of NFL players.

Good article and all, and I am glad for his successes, but I am getting really tired of the "Gangs, drugs, trouble, and turned it around" story. I would rather have the Heath Miller stories as role models.

Wait a minute. You're getting tired of hearing about guys raised in horrible situations who turn things around, and would rather hear about guys like Heath Miller who were raised in perfectly stable environments???

This makes no sense at all. Heath Miller is a really great guy, everyone knows that, but you can't compare his childhood with Shamarko's. Heath was raised in a stable home by two parents in a small VA town. Shamarko's mother was 15 when she had him!!! Not to mention his father wasn't a part of his life at all. Then his stepdad AND his mother both die, leaving Shamarko to handle everything as a college kid. Now he's made it to the NFL and is taking care of everyone. That's a pretty damn inspirational story if you ask me.

Again, I'm not taking anything away from Heath, but I guarantee that even he's in awe of what Thomas had to go through. Pretty good role model if you ask me.

Thomas between the lines should become a very solid FS with his skill set. Hard not to be a fan of someone like him.
This guy was made for our "big nickle" package. Walk out man under, fire, above average tackling skills, solid instincts and excellent speed plus "quicks" is all there and special team standout as well.
He will have a successful career and earn enough along the way. Glad he is one of ours.

Its more a "mom and stepdad died, and he stepped in to take care of his siblings" story. Ive known a few people in that situation and have tremendous respect for them.

I only question the idiocy of having bunches of kids before hitting legal drinking age, when in those circumstances.

It's easy to toss stones. I can tell you personally as a young man I didn't always play safe. You might play safe 95% of the time but hormones can certainly attenuate higher level brain functions. Find yourself in a situation without a condom and get caught up. I don't think it has anything to do with intelligence.

So, the man has made some mistakes. The moral of the story is he can provide for his children which is more than I can say for some dads.
                Trolls are people too.

Because Heath's story is a better role model than Shamarko's, whose story is also cool.

                    Just my angle.

Because a good role model is one who had everything handed to him versus one who overcame major adversity? Pro athletes shouldn't be looked upon as role models anyway.

Heath's story? I love heath miller, he's one of mg favorite steelers but unless I'm totally missing something he's just a solid human being that plays for the steelers. He doesn't have a "story" in the same way shark does....

He doesn't have a story. He's a good old white boy and not an inner city 'flunkie'.

I hope that's not the perspective BUT a lot of people think that way in 2014 and for me its terrifying. I'm not exactly sure how a country that used to have slaves can in a lot of ways be more racist now than it was before Lincoln.
