Ben Roethlisberger: I hope we don’t run Le’Veon Bell into the ground

Posted by Josh Alper on December 2, 2014

The Steelers cut running back LeGarrette Blount two weeks ago, a day after giving Le’Veon Bell 33 carries in a Monday night victory over the Titans.

Bell played on all but three snaps in that game and all but seven against the Jets the prior week, an upward trend that continued against the Saints. Bell had 21 more carries last Sunday and added eight catches while playing on 88 of the team’s 90 offensive snaps in a 35-32 loss. On Tuesday, coach Mike Tomlin said, via Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, that he wasn’t worried about over working Bell because Bell has the “pedigree” for the job.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger didn’t disagree with Bell’s ability to handle the job, but admitted to more concern than Tomlin

“I don’t know of a running back since I’ve been here that has been able to basically play every single snap,” Roethlisberger said on 93.7 The Fan. “I think that speaks volumes for his conditioning and the work that he has put in. But you do have to be careful. I hope we don’t run him into the ground, if you will. It’s that stretch of the year where everyone is going to give it everything they have and I know he probably wants to be in there every single play because that’s the kind of player he is.”

As Roethlisberger noted, it’s that stretch of the year when teams fighting for playoff spots are going to lean on their best players. The Steelers are in such a fight and Bell’s usage and production make it clear he’s one of their biggest threats, so we’ll find out how he holds up under a heavy workload in the next four weeks.

We get the same two players regardless of perceived reach or value based on arbitary pre-draft rankings.
No because in my view we should not have spent a pick on him in the first place. But I'm not hating on him. I hope he proves the pick was justified. I just don't think he will and believe working him further into the offense is counter-productive.

I understand that, but my memory is that at the time we actually picked him it looked like he would still be around in the 4th.

Hawaii - not trying to turn this into a Dri Archer thread. I've said my piece. In response to your article, if Ben doesn't get back to his normal great quarterbacking we may have no choice but to run Bell into the ground.

We have no idea if he woild be around in the 4th. If the Pats or Bungles picked him up and used him we would cry about letting him get away.

Only thing we need to do is play him more often so we can slip him out in space... putting hi, out there for 2 plays isn't going to cut it.

Supposedly we were going to pick Bryant in the 3rd and Archer 4th. But word is they heard another team would pick him before our 4th round pick so they gambled and flip flopped the two of them.

I'm no Dri Archer fan and never have been, I wanted the Steelers to draft NT Justin Ellis with that pick instead of the too small and injury-prone Archer.

and that's why I was excited about us signing Blount, he was a good enough back to take some of the workload off Bell so his wheels wouldn't fall off. and who do we have now behind Bell, Archer and an unproven UDFA rookie in Josh Harris?

let's face it, with our less than stellar defense Ben is going to have to carry us to victory if we are going to win these last 4 games and have a chance in the playoffs. when Ben is hot, we have a chance to win every game. unfortunately, when he's not we are most likely doomed to lose...

Which makes me wonder who Blount was referring to when he made it a point to mention how "honest" Belechick was as a coach.

                    Btw, I wanted Darren Sproles.

He's a perfect fit for this offense.

Sproles would have been the perfect fit for what Todd Haley is looking for in a change of pace back. Sproles is also short but unlike Archer he has a very stocky build to absorb the punishment a back in the NFL is going to be subjected to.

He also keeps AB off punt returns.
