Steelers Free Agency Failures Fall Directly on Colbert

Steelers Free Agency Failures Fall Directly on Colbert

There’s a really good chance that we’ve all been there before. We head out to the store with a very set amount of money in our pocket and we know that we have to find great value in whatever it is we are buying.

We can’t afford the top of the line but we there’s no need to settle for the clearance aisles either. We need a product that will be productive and will do it’s job when called upon. This product will be just another soldier in our drawer that will will function well yet it may have some limitations.

Heading into free agency this past offseason, Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert was in this very same predicament. He needed to find value and functionality in players that would fit nicely on the Steelers depth chart.

What Colbert unfortunately found was knock-off items. Instead of going to the local chain store, he went to the clearance section of the local dollar store and returned with players that that have offered very little in the way of value or production. So bad was Colbert’s shopping experience was that he’s now already cut one of them free.

Running back LeGarrette Blount was cut loose by the Steelers yesterday following his behavior in Nashville. Reports have circulated that Blount had worn out his welcome in the Steel City for some time and that many players saw this coming.

Colbert’s two other major signings were defensive lineman Cam Thomas and safety Mike Mitchell. Neither of these players have lived up to the billing that many hoped they would.

Thomas has spent the better part of his Steelers career on roller skates getting pushed all over the line of scrimmage. This has not been a surprise however at least not to me. When his name came up I immediately chatted up Chargers’ blogger “Booga P” who told me not to expect much and that Thomas was pretty much a disappointment there in San Diego.

Mitchell is the one who has surprised me with his unbelievably poor tackling and even worse coverage skills. Mitchell has forced two fumbles and has no interceptions through 11 games.

To make matters worse for both himself and the organization, Mitchell took it upon himself to respond to fans who were less than friendly towards him on Twitter. Mitchell even direct messaged some of these fans and even told one to “go kill himself.”

While I personally don’t feel it’s proper to attack athletes on social media, Mitchell should have known better than to respond. The Steelers have told him to avoid social media for the time being.

If you’re keeping score at home, Kevin Colbert went 0 for 3 on his three big free agent signings for 2014. I could try and be fair and tell you that Mitchell is still a work in progress and may yet come around but I don’t feel that way.

Compare Colbert’s free agent gaffes to his 2014 draft and you’ll see that it hasn’t been that great of a year for him. Perhaps this will finally be the moment where the Rooney’s allow someone else to do their shopping because it’s evident Colbert is not very good at it.

What I want to know is, what has changed? Colbert takes advice from many talking heads, scouts, assistants, and coaches, but somewhere in there he lost someone very valuable. I refuse to believe after years of success that all of sudden his luck has worn out. Who or what has changed?

Colbert is not likely the end all and final say on free agents. I'm sure he has some say but tossing him under the bus when we just had such a good draft class seems like the writer doesn't have his info together on this.

To be fair, the Blount signing was one of the better ones of the offseason at the time. I don't remember them having any off the field issues with him in NE, too. So, a better question is, what is Belichick doing to keep these guys focused that we aren't?

but notice how Belichick made no attempt to re-sign Blount...

              We did?

Jury still way out on this class, imo and that doesn't even take into account both 5th rounders are no longer on the roster.

I really like this draft class with the possible exception of Shazier, who looks like a safety to me. But, I have to agree with Mr. Spaghetti, other than Bryant's ability to get open, they haven't proven anything.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

I'm big on this draft class. More time perhaps is needed but the upside is there. Blount n Thomas contracts were light and will not strap us next year. Blount under 500k cap hit for 15 for what it's worth.

Yeah, I would be more concerned with Colbert's "big free agent signings" if they were actually big free agent signings...

Even Mitchell is not a huge commitment...but, like Ryan Clark, I believe he will get better...
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

As AxnJxn suggests, the Blount signing was pretty well received at the time. Everybody in the NFL and most fans knew that he came with baggage and was a bit of a gamble. But the Steelers and fans were looking at a situation where there was no depth behind Bell. The Blount signing seemed to solve the problem...if he could just keep his head on straight. It seemed worth the gamble. Well, hindsight is 20-20.

Thomas came cheap and we got what we paid for. Who else was out there that we could have afforded under the cap situation at the time?

Mitchell's signing was also pretty well received at the time by most fans. I'm afraid we have to hope he improves...because he's our guy now.

This article ignores decent, low risks signings like Moore, Moats and McCain. While none of these players have exceeded expectations, they have fulfilled their roles in a serviceable manner, with McCain even occupying a starting position for the time being. Mitchel and Moore both still have potential and talent to become valued contributors down the road.

Can't assume that. This can't be viewed out of context ignoring the salary cap mess we find ourselves in. No one knows what Carrington was asking for and Colbert was shopping with a credit card with a $500 limit on it. What I don't understand about the article is the criticism of the 2014 draft. IMO a pretty good one.

IMO Johnson was the only Round 5 loss that will hurt us going forward. But it's not like an uncommon event for a 5th round pick not to make a team.
