Thoughts on the running game after the Ravens game

    Two thoughts:

    1. Very impressive that we were able to still blow out a good defense after they had shut down our running game

    2. With that being said - how do we react now that a team has been able to counter Bell's running style? Does Bell hit the hole harder or still play his game?

A part of the reason Ben threw 6 touchdown passes was because the ravens were so concerned with bell. They couldn't contain him in the pass game.

Plus the Ravens front 3 are a little hard to move.

It didn't bother me at all that they couldn't run Sunday night.

1 - it is historically difficult to run in these matchups
2 - they can successfully run or pass to win now with this offense
3 - they actually DID pass to win

Hey Anjang! Haven't seen you online since the trib days. Welcome.

The Ravens sold out to the run, so they got passed on. If they had tried to cover the pass, they couldn't have shut down the run. Its OK.

no worries at all... especially since Bell has good hands.

With that said, OUR 1st round LB, of whom I'm a fan "obviously", can't stay on the field. I hope he does some high weight low rep workouts to strengthen those ligaments before next season.

How do you know he's not already doing those exercises? Strengthen the ligaments all you want, the knees and ankles are joints that can only flex so far before the ligaments overstretch and tear. Knee and ankle injuries may be the two most frequent injuries in football. There are an infinite number of ways to sprain an ankle. You can step on some guys foot; some guy can fall and roll up on you, your leg can get caught in a pileup, etc., etc., etc. I doubt there's a player in the NFL who hasn't had multiple ankle injuries in his career.

anjang...there is a name from the past. As someone else stated, not every team has Ngata waiting in the middle for the RB to come running in. Commentators can talk all they want about "the D is being patient and waiting for Bell to make his move", but without the manpower to clog up the middle while you are being patient, it is all moot.

Also, with this coaching staff, and their innate ability to adjust their gameplan on the fly , if one aspect of the game is not working, they find another that will.

I did wonder why we didn't try to run outside some. WIth Bell's speed or even some some WR runs we might have been able to get an edge as opposed to running into the wall in the middle. I did like that they made an adjustment and let Blount pound the rock. If nothing else, maybe it wore them down a bit to take the burst out of their pass rush.

I said last year that Bell reminds me of Chuck Foreman from the Vikings back in the day. Total package running and receiving. His receiving is what sets him apart from other RBs in the league.

The Steelers barely use free weights, and that's what is needed, so don't hold your breath.

Not a bad analogy. I love how well he can catch. He is right up there with another running back that was pretty OK: Marshall Faulk. I think he was OK.
