So, we were tailgating at the Jags game.....

...and the parking lot was chalk full of Steeler fans; far more Steeler fans than Jags fans, at least at the parking lot I was at.

So, these 3 people (1 guy, 2 girls) come up, and the guy was wearing a #87 Steelers jersey.

And they ask, who wore this jersey in the 80's? Using the process of elimination and scanning my memory banks, I got it.

    Can you, without cheating?

They were blown away that I got it. They said they were going from Steeler group to Steeler group for hours and NO ONE else got it right. But I did, and they were blown away.

I actually surprised myself, as I had NOT committed the guy's jersey # to memory, ever.

Exactly. I can say that I immediately recognized the number. A cult hero in Steelers lore to be sure. 6'7" will do that. Easy call.

I guessed it right without even knowing anything about the guy or seeing him play. I just picked the dude from the 80's who wasn't Louis Lipps and who people mention every once in a while.

I mean, other than Lipps, what WR even comes to mind from the 80's? Dwight Stone?

I was at that game too and I saw a bunch of obscure Steelers jerseys before, during, and after the game. Bubby Brister, Kendrell Bell, and even a Dennis Dixon to name a few. The best part of tailgating in Jax is that Jags fans are friendly as hell. One group of Jags fans next to us kept offering us free beer and BBQ just to be cool.
Obviously the standard is the standard.

Jag fans are friendly. I only saw one potential skirmish the whole time. (2 women, after that pick 6 - they started trying to kick each other, and I said, "Can't we all get along?") And I was pleased to see all the Steeler fans I saw were polite and respectful. That hadn't always been the case. The weather was ideal. Just a great, fun day all around.

True, but most of us don't think of him as an 80's Steeler, even though he played for most of the decade.

I'm not a jersey guy, partly for that reason. You get yourself a Kendrell Bell or Lamarr Woodley, and you are stuck with an expensive piece of clothing for the rest of your life. They were cool when they were a novelty, but since everyone has them now, they are played. I never got into the jersey game either, cause jerseys just aren't made for regular folks. Why would I wear an uncomfortable, expensive piece of clothing, when I can opt for those things in other products?
I wasn't hired for my disposition.
