I had the pleasure of listening to local Pittsburgh radio today and the fan reaction is almost comical.
Sure there are problems. And they're all over the place. From dumb Antonio Brown mistakes (critical drop and dumb penalty) to yet another punter that flubs a critical punt. To old player mistakes and new player mistakes. To poor coaching decisions to bad player execution.
It's quite the mess. And everyone second guessing everything and adding it all up is what makes the comedy. Tampa's not as bad as everyone seemed to think. Carolina wasn't as good. And we're neither as good or as bad as everyone thinks.
We're just 2-2. Nothing more. Nothing less. A work in progress. We've got some injuries. We've got some old guys beating out younger guys for starting spots. We're in a transition. It's a work in progress. But on the whole, we seem to be a bit better than last year. And the season and team have time to develop into a finished product.
These early losses that bring this kind of scrutiny are good when they happen early. It pushes us to work harder and work toward getting better. I think we just need a little patience.
Seriously, I heard someone complaining that Tuitt hasn't beaten out Keisel and performed at an all pro level yet, so Colbert/Tomlin have no idea how to pick and develop players. There's a lot of complaining just to complain at this point. And I get it. We want to win them all.
But at this point in the season, I think going .500 is ok as long as the team keeps moving on a positive path forward. We really don't have to be playing our best until the last quarter of the season. At this point, we just have to win enough to be in playoff contention to get to the dance.
And as far as that goes, we're still in an ok overall position. Just keep plugging. And who knows what can happen in Feb. Last week we were a contender afterall. We'll probably be a contender again next week.
