    Philosophy Needs to Change

If this team is going to be a playoff team we need to think offense first at all times. We are going to have to out score teams to win.(Obvious statement I know but 24 points is no longer enough to do that) What does this mean?

This needs to be Bens team. He looks better than ever. Let him sling it in the redzone. No more screens from the 9 and try and run it in. Trust Ben to make the throws.

We must score TDs to close the half. No more draws with 2 minutes left in a half and play it safe for a field goal. No more play it safe so we dont turn it over. We cant afford to waste possessions because we cant trust this defense.

Throw the ball against obvious run defenses to close out games. We cant turn the game over to defense and expect them not to collapse. We gave Tamps 50 seconds, they only needed 43, and thats Tampa freakin Bay. Imagine when its Drew Brees or Matt Ryan.

Whether you blame Lebeau,Tomlin, the players, or injuries for the failings of this defense, bottom line is its not getting fixed anytime soon. So quit relying on the defense to win games and start relying on the offense to put points on the board and win games. This has a chance to be the best Steelers offense we have had in some time. Lets play to our strengths and beat teams 33-30. It may be the only way.

The strongest units on the team are the interior OL & running backs.

Coincidently, running the ball also takes our Defense off the field- the most inconsistant group on the team.

We need to change the philosophy. The Steelers need to become more the Haley-Chiefs run-first Offense that had Jamaal Charles as the focus. It helps out every other unit. The Steelers have a very strong 1-2 punch unit in Bell & Blount, coupled with a strong interior OL. Use it. Grind the clock. Keep the opposition Offense off the field.
The people that are trying to make the world worse never take a day off, why should I?

    Light up the darkness.

Keep in mind, those Chief teams lost. They were not winners. I actually don't have much of a problem with the play calling mix, other when they go to conservative with a lead. They need to keep the gas pedal pushed down more, while keeping the rush going as well. Just don't go too conservative, as is there nature.

I dont disagree with you. But I would like to see the Steelers use the pass to open up the run. This team has the potential to do whatever it wants offensively. Ben needs to have more control over play selection. A run first game plan gets you 20 to 24 points a game. Thats not enough to win with a bottom 5 defense.

Exactly! Turtle ball will no longer hold a lead. We need 60 minutes of playing like we are down by ten to win. The team isnt built to play the way we are used to seeing the Steelers play.

The Defense, right now, is not good enough to be on the field half the time & have us win enough games.

Yes, the Steelers CAN pass the ball effectively. But it doesn't slow the game down. This team needs to eat the clock to keep the inexperienced Defense off the field & fresher.

They have a good, grinding running game in a league now designed to stop the passing game.

The Bucs didnt sell out to stop the pass. It appeared to me to be the opposite. Look at the Cleveland game. We took our foot off the gas petal. We tried to run our way to a win in the second half, and almost blew the game because of it. 3 yards and a cloud of dust vs 8 man fronts doesn't score enough points to win you a game when you have a defense that cant stop anybody. That strategy will lead to lots more 27 to 24 losses. Light up the score board and let the chips fall where they may.

Why aren't you allowed to run the ball and score points?!?
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

While I like the idea of passing to set up the run in today's NFL, this O line simply struggles too much in pass protection for that to be a realistic philosophy. It's unfortunate, because the dynamic playmakers are mostly on the offensive side of the ball, but that's just the way it is. Ben's simply not going to last the season at this rate of being hit.

Go watch the game again the LB was flying in on running plays, I even said to myself that they won't be able to run how the bucs was selling out and that's when Haley started coaching a good game imo

I didn't think our running game was shut down, we were just passing the ball so well that we didn't need to run as much. We do have a 100 million dollar qb and arguably the top wideout in the league.

Lets just keep doing exactly what we have always done. Its been working great over the last 2 1/4 season. Run the ball and play defense has gotten us to a 18-18 record over that time span.

Actually, the team has veered away from reliance on the running game....kind of coincided with the record getting worse.

That said, I don't blame that for 2 8-8 seasons.

I am saying that this team is set up to be a dominant running team, but we don't play like it. We don't playcall for it.

Chadman, I think this team is set up to be a dominant offensive unit. We have all the pieces in place at the skill positions. Offensive line has been better than it has been. Take advantage of what the defense gives you. But take the training wheels off Ben. Let him win you games. Let him throw directly into the endzone when we cross the 20. Let him run a full 2 minute offense to close out first halves. This isnt 2004 Ben Roethlisberger anymore. We dont have to wait until the end of games anymore to put the game in his hands. We need to score more to make up for our obvious weakness which is defense. We need to be more aggressive throughout games in order to keep the defense from blowing leads. Milking 10 point leads wont cut it with our current roster. No ones saying dont run the ball.
